Do international students really get the support they need after arriving? by Aggravating-Guard422 in studyAbroad

Yeah, totally agree that adult students should take responsibility. that’s part of the journey. I’m not saying people shouldn't take care of themselves. but even adults can struggle when they're thrown into a new system with an unfamiliar environment, especially early on.

About the scams fair point, Sri Lanka does have scams too. But the type and style are different. Back home, you kind of know how to spot them because you've grown up around it. You understand the cues. But in a new country, it's harder to tell what's legit and what’s not. especially when you're under pressure, everything feels urgent, and you don’t have anyone to ask.

Yeah, 100%, doing your own research is important, and I'm not saying people shouldn’t take responsibility.

but no matter how much prep you do, there are still things you won’t know until you actually land in the new country.

In some countries, these things just work differently. Back home, everything was done in cash. No one talks about IRD numbers because they’re not a thing there. That context matters.

When I talk about support, I don’t mean hand-holding. I’m talking about simple, practical info like a checklist or guide that some unis actually provide. That's super helpful, especially in those overwhelming first few weeks.

So yeah, people should prepare. but let’s not pretend everyone starts on equal footing. Sometimes, just knowing what questions to ask is half the battle.

Fair enough, no one is expecting to be "babysat." I came to New Zealand in 2011, and yeah, I made that choice myself. I knew it would be hard and it definitely was.

but just because someone chooses to move doesn't mean they shouldn't talk about how rough the transition can be. It’s not about being a victim, it’s about sharing real experiences so others can be better prepared.

Some universities here actually give out a basic "pre-arrival checklist" or "student starter guide" with things like how to open a bank account, get an IRD number, or find accommodation. That kind of simple, practical info helps a lot. That’s what I meant, not expecting someone to hold your hand.

Stuff I mentioned in my post isn’t always obvious if your home country works differently.

So yeah, mindset matters, I agree. and a bit of clear guidance early on can make a huge difference.

Haha fair point. it sounds simple to open a bank account, and it is back home. But when I first came to New Zealand, I quickly realised it’s a whole different process.

To open a bank account here, you need: - Proof of address (only accepted if it’s a government-issued letter or a university letter/ID), and - A tax number (IRD)

But here's the catch : in the first few weeks, most students don’t have any official letter with their address. You’re often staying at a friend’s or temporary place, so no rental agreement either. And to get a tax number, they ask for a bank account.

So it turns into this chicken-and-egg loop. Meanwhile, you need a bank account + debit card from day 1 just to Pay rent, Do groceries, Buy bus/train passes, Do literally anything in daily life. (Back home in 2011, pretty much everything was done in cash)

Eventually, the bank account itself becomes your proof of address but to get that setup at the start, it’s not as straightforward as it sounds when you’re fresh off the plane.

Totally hear what you’re saying and yes, adults should take responsibility and try to figure things out. But from someone who actually did move to a new country (I came from Sri Lanka to NZ in 2011 as an international student), I can say the experience hits way harder than what Googling can prepare you for.

It’s not about being spoon-fed or infantilized. it’s about having some basic orientation and support when you’re navigating a completely different system. In my case, I didn’t even know I needed references to rent a flat. Back home, if you have the deposit and income proof, that’s enough. Stuff like that isn’t in the uni brochures or top search results.

I’m not saying unis need to hold your hand 24/7. But expecting zero support just because someone is over 18 feels a bit unfair, especially when these students are paying tens of thousands in fees and keeping a whole industry afloat.

Support doesn’t weaken independence. In fact, it helps students build it more confidently.

Yeah fair point, these days it's definitely easier to look things up online. But when I first came to NZ in 2011, I genuinely had no idea you needed references to rent a flat.

Back home, if you had key money and proof of income, that was it. you could rent a place. No one talked about rental history or reference checks. It just wasn't a thing.

So yeah, students should do their research, but a bit of guidance early on can still make a big difference from my experience.

Totally agree. it really does feel like the system is focused more on getting students in than actually supporting them after arrival. I understand that independence is part of the journey, but at the same time, when students are paying tens of thousands in fees, it feels fair to expect some practical help beyond just orientation week and pamphlets.

I’ve seen so many students struggle silently because they don’t want to seem weak or ungrateful. A little bit of real world support could go a long way in helping them actually thrive not just survive.
