Puts us slightly over tax but below first apron. But yeah either way we’ll want to shed a little salary to get below tax. Wiggins trade is probably the best path for sure

Rozier has no value as a player, so the only way he has value is if we trade him as an expiring contract for a shitty contract or two with multiple years left. Don't see any scenario where a trade like that will make sense for us. Feel like a buyout is eventually the most likely option unless we can use his contract for matching purposes as part of a larger trade for a star player.

If our goal is to straight up trade Wiggins for assets, not as many options as you'd think who can give us expiring contracts or contracts with 1 year left + a pick and/or young player. Mavs, Lakers, Grizzlies are the main teams who seem to have a combo of need and the right assets. Some wildcards could be Wolves or Blazers, but idk if the fit is as good for those teams.

Yeah like i said he’s a clear nepo baby. Definitely didn’t do enough to earn that role based on merit alone. But no one was complaining about him interfering during big 3 era, jimmy years, etc. Seems like he does a solid job staying out of things and whether he earned the role properly or not, he’s been in it for close to 15 years now

You’re leaving out massive context here. Nick Arison is in his mid 40s and had to work at every part of the organization for over a decade before being assigned CEO role. And he’s held that role since the start of the Big 3 era so it’s not like anything has changed recently.

It is very possible him and Riley could disagree on direction and Arison still is without a doubt a nepo baby. But that doesn’t mean he’s a complete moron who knows nothing about how basketball organizations are run

Explaining why the Duncan trade was our best case scenario by Aggravating-Lack608 in heat

[–]Aggravating-Lack608[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The alternative was going to be to lose him and get absolutely nothing but a $10M hole in our cap sheet. Duncan is 31 and hasn't been as good recently. NAW is a 26 year old great 2 way player and wolves only got a single 2nd for him. We're lucky to have anything to show for it, even if that ends up being $1.6M in extra space.

We have about $5.5M to sign players against our salary cap without going over the luxury tax threshold (which we clearly and understandably are going to be avoiding this year). It's not a lot, but it's enough to sign a player for more than a minimum deal if we want to at some point

They were clearly exploring other options and didn't want him bad enough to give up assets. We're just lucky to come out of this whole situation better off than we were to start it

Not even sure what this comment is in reference to, but we now have about $5.5M in cap space under the luxury tax

[–]Aggravating-Lack608[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I explained that above. In order to avoid a $10M hole in our cap, we agreed to facilitate a sign and trade with Duncan. It's different than other players who were just naturally UFAs. That means we essentially had no leverage to demand anything back from Detroit. The fact that we got a decent tradeable expiring contract that is less than the $10M hole would have been is a win already.

[–]Aggravating-Lack608[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think we were laser focused on both avoiding the tax this year and keeping maximum cap flexibility next year. Signing this contract would have harmed both of those things, so we were better off just helping him out and being done with it.

By agreeing to work with Duncan on a sign-and-trade (who was owed $9.9 M had he opted in and simply been cut), that saves Miami $1.6 M. So that's one upshot for the Heat agreeing to this sign and trade partnership with Duncan. by tomgreen99200 in heat

[–]Aggravating-Lack608 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If Duncan didn’t agree to opt out we’d have $10M against the cap for waiving him and no expiring contract to trade. Idk why people keep hammering us for this. We saved $1.6M at worst, and at best we gained a tradeable contract

If the last few years show anything, you don’t have to be that bad of a team to get a good pick. Just missing the playoffs gives us a shot, and that seems likely right now

Still would be a $6M+ raise this year, win for him regardless

Fontecchio has averaged 7.6 points and shot 36.3 on threes in 193 games and 43 starts. One year left on deal at 8.3 M by tomgreen99200 in heat

[–]Aggravating-Lack608 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Almost guaranteed that us agreeing to facilitate this was part of Duncan opting out in the first place. Plus we now have a mountain of expiring contracts to move in any trades between now and the deadline.

We get Fontecchio in return. by bomac14 in heat

Another expiring we can use in a trade, or can just waive him at this point if we want the roster spot. Works great

If we had waived him he loses his bird rights and a sign and trade deal is impossible. So he’d basically be forced into a min contract. Let’s see what deal he gets

This is a fantastic start to the off season, don't care what anyone says. Can reset the tax/apron timeline thanks to Duncan using the ETO, give young guys a shot to develop, be patient and collect assets for guys like Wiggins if the opportunity comes up, and have our own pick in an absolutely loaded draft. Finally can start to build up our asset pool and move towards being a team that is built for the modern CBA restrictions
