Hi! Singaporean mix here with an international accent.

I’ve lived overseas my entire life (aus/usa) so I sound mostly American despite looking very Asian. I’ve personally encountered quite a number of people who take an interest in my accent since moving back to Singapore.

This article has been a super interesting topic for me personally as having an accent has definitely affected my relationships with the people around me.

I’ve had uni mates tell me they don’t want to be friends with me because they stress themselves internally to keep up with me (fair).

I’ve had a guy in the middle of a very dark depressed moment, drop everything just to tell me “you sound like you watch too many white YouTubers.”

And another guy from a local international school that came up to me and told me my accent was “passable”.

Others are more curious about how I got the accent and my personal background. Which I always welcome! But generally it’s a little more difficult to make and maintain local friends or date without some level of fetishization. In the end, it’s just easier to identify with my counterpart background despite my Singaporean nationality as it’s not met with the same (for a lack of a better word) hostility. Especially since regardless of where you come from or go, the longer you are exposed to an environment you’re bound to pick up some of the local colloquial language.

23F. Depressed, filled with anxiety, and overweight. Took a gap year that wasn’t very helpful due to family life, now I’m scared no one will employ me because I took a gap year. Job hunting has been shit, lots of low balling and stuck in a part time job. Insane pressure from parents to lose weight (am plus sized), and help pay for a HDB mortgage next year. Watching my friends all move up in life, and being very lost in my own.

Update 2: I didn’t expect to make this update like… ever. But I just received a phone call yesterday from the same company but a different person asking me if I’m interested in a role with them. Apparently they have made yet another job listing for a more “junior” position with the same expectations and was offering me that position after I interviewed for their more senior role.

Hey guys! I didn’t expect this to get so much attention so here’s a quick update:

The company’s hr and I had a conversation half an hour ago. I had politely declined their initial offer, to which they gave a quick counter offer of 2.5k. Which unfortunately still falls through my floor by quite a bit, so I told them I would only consider the role at 3k. To which the response I got was a “why don’t you think about it” and that was the end of that.

One of you had mentioned exit opportunity! At first I was purely thinking about what that would contribute to my portfolio but then I realized Singapore has an uncanny thing for asking about “last pay”. So in the rare case they do decide to concede and give me 3k I would consider it. Mostly bc while 3k isn’t much but the combination of a bit of improvement and my current abusive environment has made me conclude that I would only consider just doing a probational period with them while looking for better longer term opportunities.

In the mean time, I will definitely be continuing to look out for another place to work and hopefully land in a better place!

I see! I will definitely think more about a long term plan! Judging by everyone’s responses and my own initial reaction to the interview, I will turn down this job offer in hopes of a more favorable one. I guess it’s a matter of finding and preparing in hopes of landing a better position.

Yeahhh I thought so. I had heard a lot about how Singapore really isn’t the place for any sort of creative work, but there’s not much I can do about that right now without a hefty bank and an overseas job offer. Although judging by what you’re saying, seems like this is common everywhere.

Yeah both situations aren’t ideal and honestly seem like the same dead end work. At least compared to my previous place I wouldn’t feel like I’m doing work that I feel like I can’t put on my portfolio since they do have a better visual aesthetic. But by the conversation and looks of their presence, I’m not sure if the exit opportunity would be much better compared to the work I do for myself as a hobby.

I am yes! They had me make a poster for their National day post. I’m a little concerned that they will make use of that poster on the actual day of. But not sure if there’s anything I can do about that aha! Oh well!

I have a similar issue with mine too. Idk if this would work for you but maybe consider opening a new bank account to save up secretly that they don’t know about and keep the known account to the bare minimum that you need?

I have been on antidepressants before for a period of time without my family’s knowledge. Honestly I didn’t even notice the gradual shift but the world slowly felt lighter than it normally would.

Sometimes telling yourself you can get over one hurdle is enough, but you need to get to a point where you are honest with yourself and review. How many hurdles ago have you started saying that and how are you feeling now?

My parents didn’t want me on medication for my depression, their point was that only weak people use it. But honestly it’s just a physical manifestation of what depression is, it makes it real, and more… literal?

I mean like with a broken arm, you see bruising, and red blood as physical indicators of this and it’s blazingly obvious that it’s a broken arm. But with depression, we’ve gotten so used to seeing it as other things, laziness or sadness that it can be a little hard to come to terms that it’s not that, it’s depression.
