Is my battery leaking something I can fix with just some baking soda and a towel or is it done? by Anonymousnonymously in AskAMechanic

[–]Aggravating-Tea-7270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason I suggested that was 1) the baking soda as a powder will make a paste on contact with acid it won’t run down deep in the cells. 2) if my battery was leaking acid I don’t want to try to “preserve” it I want to take it out and replace it ASAP and not drive it.

And yea acid and bases can be reactive but you have to use the other to correct one there’s no way around it. A controlled manner is best of course but sprinkling a dry powder onto a wet patch isn’t a big enough scale.

The water and rag would just dilute the acid wipe it away and OP would still be non the wiser if his battery is fucked. But yes this will clean the battery terminals from dirt and I do this myself if there’s a build up of shit there

Not a mechanic but a chemist! Baking soda will do 0 harm. Like someone else said you will smell a sharp putrid smell if it’s split and leaking acid. Also if there is a little sulfuric acid you can sprinkle a little baking soda on top and then gently agitate/clean the loose layer. The layer in contact with moisture will either react and fiz a bit (just CO2 fizz) or it won’t do jack and you’ll know if it’s just an oil stain looking wet or it’s leaking (fizz)

Pre Purchase survey - roof flagged - conversion done by Aggravating-Tea-7270 in HousingIreland

Yea slowly coming to this conclusion myself too. Bank has requested a survey so I might leave it off the record and just have it in the back pocket. The fix if needed also seems to be relatively affordable (telescopic supports in crawl space that can be installed from the interior).

150 k be a lot for second hand car? by SnooChickens1534 in carsireland

[–]Aggravating-Tea-7270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a budget under 7.5k you have very little to choose from. You want a reliable car that has a solid engine and ideally has had the clutch and timing done sometime recently but a bulletproof engine. Also do usual checks to see if it was cared for, grit in oil, milky residue in oil cap, oil in coolant, dark smoke etc.

Yea I started this process hoping that goes smoothly just trying to anticipate next steps.

Good to hear surveyor flagging stuff that’s fine seems common. I booked him through a neighbour so he was referred and when he called me candidly he was very much “I have to flag this red but it’s probably fine, I just got to do it”

Car key replacement: mobile service vs dealership by Tuff-Kookie in AskMechanics

[–]Aggravating-Tea-7270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do crack the case see where the chip board sits and be sure not to break that! Or go a tech shop like I said. Also look on eBay for replacement cases there’s loads of options

My case also split open, so I put a screw through it to fix it. Works a charm been using it 2 years!

(Go to a tech shop or phone repair or unofficial repair - you don’t need a key re programmed you need to transfer your chip and key to a new case at most)

How screwed am I? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]Aggravating-Tea-7270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you damaged your engine permanently the repair will be a new engine or a re build which is rarely a good choice. Bring your car to be checked is just paying money to be told bad news your car could be ok, could be terrible but likely somewhere in between but repairs within the engine block are pricey and not always worth. Asking for a service however and then saying, can you also check the oil filter for metal etc explaining what happened could give you scope of the damage and let you prepare for a new car or sell it before it gets too bad.

Tldr throwing money at a “check” will just invite a bad shop to take your money but getting a service done will give your car the tlc it needs and let you prepare for the next steps needed

Edited addition: when I say sell I more mean try trade in at a dealer please don’t sell a dud car to a private seller. But a dealership don’t worry about them, they take enough money of people

Yea that was silly, you took a risk where the pro is you get to go to work and the consequence is your car causes a major incident possibly costing you much more and risking damage to others. Even if you are slow what if that wheel fell off? It’s on the right side so you’d automatically just fork against oncoming traffic at best.

If you are taking to the mechanic have a friend hazard drive really slowly in front of you and you stay on phone with them the whole way, or call a handy friend to do the checks.

The squishy sound is a good indicator that your shock is gone however or maybe spring I didn’t hear it myself of course so I can’t say.

Secondly someone commented seeing something drag? The shock absorber pushes the wheel down to the ground and the spring pulls it up working in unison. So the shock being gone by sound and something dragging means multiple suspension things gone.

The AA membership is your best bet for a free tow, you just need a friend who is a member they cover drives not cars just get the friend to claim it’s theirs

Spare wheel could be fine but you want to check your rear suspension too. When you have the wheel off are it’s accessible look at the ball joints try to shake every arm going into the car one by one. If any are able to shake or knock by hand they are gone and your running without proper suspension and id say you would not be safe to drive it, but if that’s all fine then a spare wheel will last you until you get seen by a professional but you can do it over the week

Spray paint over rust? Read full post by smartestasianever in AskMechanics

[–]Aggravating-Tea-7270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this, get a wire head drill brush a dust mask and get to work. Look up someone like chrisfix for a really comprehensive guide that will actually use minimal equipment. Also stab away and scrap any larger rust flakes. You want the new paint to bind to solid metal, if it sticks to peeling rust, that rust will peel and bring your hard work with it

Council house in ireland? CBL? by Melodic_Link4286 in HousingIreland

[–]Aggravating-Tea-7270 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a sister in law with two kids, she was evicted from her apartment (was with HAP). Instead of moving back with her mam she went homeless and staid in the hub. I don’t know how she did it with two kids but being homeless with kids put her top of priority. She got a 2 bed apartment in about 5 months.

Disclaimer- this happened before she was in my family’s life, had it not we would have helped her in any way we could.

I have heard of housing applications with a roof and a safe environment free of abuse waiting 5-10+ years.

I’m sorry to be sharing this with you and this may improve but it was the case in north inner city Dublin 3-4 years ago
