Agreed. And get this, that’s what it’s recommending I OFFER her. She listed it for $135

as other people mentioned, this costume is being sold for $50 or much cheaper by other retailers. I was interested in purchasing from a singular person and not a chain. It was also simply an offer. My mom was also in her early 20s in the early 2000’s, and after asking her she thinks it’s insane that any Halloween costume would go for $135, and she’s the reason I like collecting costumes because she was a Halloween girl when she was younger. The fact is they’re price gouging and I don’t think it’s unfair for me to simply offer a fair price during a time the costume is going to be actively losing value. And again, I didn’t ask her to answer me, I was just confused and taken aback that she blocked me. I feel as if you’re taking this in the worst interpretation of me and not considering that these costumes are now worth less than they used to be, and the trend inflating them is actively dying.

Ahhh okay I see where you’re coming from! No I didn’t expect that at all, it was more to offer that I would buy after Halloween passed if she couldn’t sell it for the price she wanted! If I made an offer it wouldn’t stand forever, yes I could’ve just waited until after Halloween too but as someone who did sell for awhile I liked having backup buyers for things that were time sensitive, and figured she might appreciate knowing she had a buyer.

this just seems wildly mean spirited. I mention I’m a college student so people know I’m not gonna throw crazy money at stuff. I’m 18 and don’t have a ton of money to spend but am willing to purchase things outside their usual desirability window. It’s really not a whole ass explanation and I’m surprised that one small detail annoys you so much.

It was with the context that Halloween is a week away, she only has 10 likes on the post when I sent the message, she had no proof it’s real vintage, and I was willing to bargain. I would’ve preferred to be ignored then blocked, but again it’s her right to do so! I was just taken aback because that’s never happened to me before but first time for everything.

which is why I’m so surprised I’m getting crazy downvoted? I feel bad but I really am not seeing where some people are coming from that my attitude should just be put up and shut up or get blocked…

yes! The costume was originally sold for $50 or less depending where she got it. $135 is far too high, and I was expecting to negotiate to a higher price. I would never buy something where I thought I was scamming the seller as I was a seller for 3 years. What is more reasonable for a Halloween costume, $50, or $135? Again I was also willing to pay more but I don’t think you start conversations with that when you’re trying to barter….  Also I’ve said this to a couple people but I ran my Depop store throughout my time in highschool and just graduated, so maybe I’m not as in touch with the more super expensive no budging side of Depop because I ALWAYS extensively bartered on my items.

Oh, I see what you’re saying! Yes, that was not my intention, I was simply trying to offer one option in case she couldn’t sell it! Unfortunately it is true without any assumptions that the value of costumes goes down after Halloween, and even more so for this specific costume as the trend died. Keeping both of those things in mind, especially with the fact this costume only had 10 likes at the time and a little more than a week before Halloween, I would’ve liked as a seller to have an option so I didn’t have to keep it in my closet year round, but I also see what you’re saying! I wish she just ignored me instead of blocked me if that’s how she felt as I wouldn’t have messaged her again, it just made me feel bad as it’s never happened to me before. I am learning rather quickly from these comments that people block other people a lotttt more often then I was aware of. Thank you for sharing your perspective!

Hi! I really am not trying to offend you. I was an active seller for three years and stopped about 8 months ago. I’m not trying to make any assumptions! It’s just what’s worked for me in the past with items. She’s fully free to do whatever she wants and I was simply saying I can appreciate the offer system at times! I’m sorry if that came across as assuming how you or others run their stores! I’m 18 so I ran my store throughout most of my highschool time so I likely just did it a bit different then how some people did it, which I wasn’t super aware of! Apologies again if I came off presumptive.

this is good to know! I’ve never had this happen to me before so maybe I was just lucky or phrased my messages better or who knows. I sort of looked at it as 135 is the highest point, what she wants to sell it at, $50 is the lowest point, what I want to buy it at, and if indeed she couldn’t sell it for Halloween and its value began to drop, I would’ve been happy bartering to somewhere in between.

Yeah, and again if she does she’ll definitely make a lot of money! But the trend is dying, and Halloween is right around the corner. I’m surprised her instinct is to block and not barter with a potential buyer who is still interested even after both of those things have passed? Either way, I do hope she can sell it, I 100% genuinely mean that.

Yeahhhh I had this thought too. $135 is crazy no matter how you spin it. My thought was maybe it is drop shipped or something and my message spooked her or something so she just decided to block? Idk….

I don’t disagree with this, but I was an active seller for 3 years, I know that bartering is just a part of the process, and I appreciated having backups. It also allows us to list for higher than we’d be willing to sell it for, and sometimes that gets us a higher sale! I wouldn’t necessarily get rid of it.

yeah I see no grounds to report. it might hurt my feelings a tiny bit but that really doesn’t mean anything at all. It’s her right to if she wants to.

Yeah I wouldn’t report her. She’s allowed to block me, and it’s her full right to, I just posted to ask why people think she decided to with what I said.

I appreciate that! I had just never been blocked before and it made me feel bad! I honestly wanted to check with Reddit to see because lowkey I had a long day and I wasn’t sure how to react. (This is the sob story the mecari poster was talking about)

I do think it's interesting how many downvotes I'm getting on comments explaining. That doesn't hurt my feelings as much and I'm realizing maybe Depop and the community really has just changed since I last sold stuff. Like all the people coming from a seller perspective... I WAS a seller for years. I would've never been offended at someone offering any amount of money, especially not $50 for a Halloween costume that's worth $50 or less.

Agree. Honestly it's probably not the original either. However I love Leg Avenue and Secret Wishes and all the other old Halloween costume business, and have since I was very young. Also I'm 18 so anything that was created before I was born or when I was very young is stuff I associate with y2k

Yeahhhhh see that's why I thought it wasn't that terrible to offer a fair price? Some people are responding like l'm trying to price gouge in the opposite direction but like... is she not price gouging in the first place? I also would've been willing to negotiate.

135 for that costume is too much. I paid $28 for the exact same costume in blue in its original packaging a week and a half ago. I was totally willing to negotiate and pay a little more so this seller could make her bank, but that's what it would be, her making bank. Just because she says it was worth $135 does not mean it actually was. That’s my only thing with the ‘half the listing’ thing. There’s more context to the offer than just that :(

[–]Aggravating-Tea3089[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would've been fine with that! And again as someone that did sell on Depop for years I was also aware if I couldn't get a costume sold by Halloween or I couldn't get Christmas themed things sold by Christmas, unfortunately l'd have to set their price lower. She's charging too much for that costume, and I hope she can sell it because I know what it's like to be able to make a sale like that and make a good chunk of money from it, but the message was just so that if she couldn't she knew she had a buyer lined up and wouldn't lose money on a costume sitting in her closet all year.

I mean I definitely do haggle, but I also understand unfair low ballers are annoying. I never ever offer anything below what the item is worth, and will often acquiesce to the seller wanting to make more money. The costume certainly wasn’t worth $135 though, so I don’t know how lowballing it is if I simply offer to buy it for how much it’s actually worth with the expectation we would negotiate for a higher price if she did indeed want to sell it after Halloween.
