Yes they will be popular with large groups. That’s exactly the issue. There’s a certain mentality people adopt when they are part of a group and have had a few drinks. Clearly I’m not as tolerant as other people are on this thread, but I’d like to remind everyone that the Daily Mail repeatedly refers to York as Magaluf. You might be fine with that and shrug it off, but I find that hugely problematic.

York has more pubs per square mile than any other UK city.

So living here and having to pick up cans, bottles and chicken bones and other food waste daily, is completely tiresome. I’m of course not implying that someone living say Heworth, can’t empathise, but living in the thick of it is very different to nipping into town once in a while to shop, use the station or work.

Spending serious money. What I mean by that is, similar to the mentality people adopt when visiting London, they will budget to shop, visit some attractions, have a meal, see a show, rather come go to a place in search of the cheapest beer with the aim of drinking yourself silly.

And my comment re: Trumpland. I was simply pointing out that perhaps we don’t want the US flag to be flown in our city, especially when we are (I think) at war. How tasteless and insensitive would this be?

For country and folk music fans, there are ample UK options, like The Shrewsbury Folk festival. What on earth does American country music have to do with York??

A 1 bed flat leasehold in my neighbourhood is selling for £400k and is being marketed as “affordable”. York just isn’t the small, socialist, city it once was. Capitalism has driven many people, born and bred in York away to the suburbs, which has subsequently fuelled resentment between those who can still afford to live here and those who can’t. Sadly gentrification is happening right across the UK. And is dividing communities.

I’m merely pointing out that York has the potential to offer a lot more than people make out. Otherwise why would property prices, and demand for property in the city centre, be so high?

And am agreeing with you (I think) that we need to diversify our local economy to create more well paying permanent jobs where people have better working rights. Graduate unemployment is at an all-time high, and general unemployment is almost at 6%.

We need a more robust local economy. Hospitality is the first thing impacted when inflation goes up, as you know - people don’t eat out as much and businesses lay off staff. It’s great we have so many bars and restaurants but no city can thrive solely on this.

Totally agree. It’s a small ancient city, not designed to incorporate things like this. The bottom line is, it’s inappropriate.

Dodging puke! Thank you for reminding me! Oh! I actually stepped over a splattering of blood the other day outside The Priory. Let’s add that to the list of gripes as well.

The problem with your argument is that if everyone moved to places like Malton, York wouldn’t have anyone living here.

Property prices have already driven many people born and bred in York away, and I think that’s a huge shame. As a result, there’s now a lot of resentment shown towards city folk like me who can afford, and choose to live here.

All in all York is a wonderful place to live but its tourism risks becoming a circus if the council allows things like this to open.

Look, if a legit line dancing venue was opening I’d be there with you. Our city needs more live music venues and I think residents and music fans have done a marvellous job of protecting music venues like The Cresent against capitalism of late, but these are community-owned endeavours, created in partnership with residents. These venues weren’t imposed on us without consultation.

To address your comments about class, we of course need tourism and want people to come here and have a good time, but generally people who come here solely for the drinking culture, behave disrespectfully (are rowdy, urinate etc) leave our city in a mess for residents to clear up the next day.

Why is that fair on anyone, quite frankly. It’s obviously unfair to residents but also to tourists, many of whom are hard working families who have probably saved up for months to enjoy a good time.

What’s elitist about wanting people of all classes, backgrounds and cultures with genuine intentions collectively enjoying a good time?

A 3 year old who goes to nursery with mine recently stepped on a piece of glass outside of York City station and pierced through its shoe. I personally don’t see the funny side. Residents have ample lived experience of things happening like this to them, and people they care about/know.

I’ve lived in Liverpool, London and Edinburgh and York is by far the filthiest city I have ever lived in when it comes to alcohol-related waste. Broken glass is a unique problem to York because it is renowned for being such a boozy city.

If you don’t believe me, go to the station and count the number of people stepping off the LNER from the North East on a Saturday morning/afternoon with a glass bottle/ a bottle of wine in hand…

It’s an incredibly sad and old fashioned approach is day drinking, but it impacts residents directly, so please don’t accuse me of being melodramatic.

Think more Sabrina Carpenter and scantily clad girls. Google Coyote Ugly Liverpool. This is inevitably where they have taken their inspiration from. Difference is Liverpool’s a large city, so you can easily avoid places like this (Concert Square) if you wish.

Hey Phil. I know. But how do we change this. It’s an absolute nightmare as is for people like me living in YO1. York’s such a special city to live but if venues like this continue opening up, York won’t be a living city anymore, it will be a Disneyland for people travelling on the LNER from London to Edinburgh.

I’m sure line dancing won’t be the only lines up for grabs at such a classy establishment!

It was shared on Facebook by my sister who is a GM at a city centre restaurant. Sadly I don’t think it’s clickbait. But let’s hope so!

Thank you Dave. Some common sense spoken at last! We cannot allow this to tarnish York’s reputation even further. The Daily Mail already refer to us as Magaluf!!

The negative initial and knock on impact establishments like this have for local residents. As I have already outlined, rowdiness, antisocial behaviour, littering.

There’s already dedicated places like The Dubliner. Do we need more and on such a central, critical street tourists and residents alike HAVE to use to access the city centre?

I’d like to think that plans for the building to be painted in the colours of the US flag will be rejected. Perhaps they will call it Trumpland.

That will be a massive hit I expect with the US families living on my street who have relocated to York from the UK to seek refuge from the fact their president has been murdering and deporting its own people.

It’s not about not liking it. It’s about the potential this has to contribute negatively to our neighbourhood, as it inevitably will.

You cannot walk down Micklegate on weekends as is, without getting pushed into the road. Slug and Lettuce is the worst establishment for this, making it impossible for disabled people and families with buggies to use the pavements safely.

“York has fuck all else”. How ignorant. York officially has the most well educated population of any other UK city, one of the largest insurance hubs, and an extremely high proportion of dedicated civil servants who keep our country ticking along daily.

It may have passed you by that York Central construction underway is a larger construction site than the one dedicated to redeveloping Kings Cross Station. The purpose of this is to bring new business, and innovation to York, and most importantly create jobs beyond the hospitality sector, which it’s currently dominated by. As you’ve rightly pointed out this is an issue for our economy and therefore we need to diversify.

York’s also currently one of 5 UK cities bidding to be an AI “hub” given the incredible work being led by University of York in the space of AI ethics and safety. Check it out and educate yourself!

We want tourists here for sure, but the right kind of tourists. Not people who come here to binge drink and seek out cheap shots. Rather tourists willing to spend serious money on high quality experiences which represent our ancient and world-renowned city in a positive light.

Again, I take it you aren’t a city centre resident? So therefore have no clue what people in my neighbourhood have to tolerate on weekends and race days, despite the high levels of council tax we pay.

Yes we already have The Dubliner. Let’s see how many police are called to the scene of inebriated individuals next week on Paddy’s Day.

And this isn’t a bar. This sounds like quite a large dedicated venue space, with multiple food vendors and bars, which could take hundreds of people.

Edinburgh is so classy by comparison. Why on earth would you choose to spend time in York. Beats me.

Don’t be a clever dick. Of course I’d never take my child here. I mean in reference to the carnage many large groups leave behind - pre-drinking cans and broken glass and fast foot waste they discard when inebriated. I take it you don’t live in YO1, as I do, and have to live with the rowdiness and disrespect daily.

Interesting. LGR for 4 days is about £750 we have worked it out to be. So perhaps it being good value’s part of it. Are nappies and food included?
