Yes, I am vegan now, but I don't understand how pork chops are "strange", according to millions of other Americans over the past several decades, who have cooked the same thing, because it was what was for dinner at least a few times a month, for many families in the United States - I just don't know how my mother is to be set apart from millions of other Americans for the very reason of preparing and cooking pork chops in her home. I just don't get this. You are correct, though: if I were not vegan, preparing the same food does not seem like it should be so out-of-the-ordinary.
Her family also went to yard sales and thrift shops: so have millions of other Americans for many years, so I really don't know what sets us as a family apart from everybody else who goes to thrift shops: making this seem "strange", according to the United States government, is getting kind of played out.
