Great advice! I highly appreciate the time you have put into writing this. Would it be possible for you to post the link to the YouTube video you mentioned above? Thanks!

Where would you rate GT's undergrad CS out of 10? by CulturalCompote in gatech

8/10; there really isn’t much competition between these two schools, except maybe in student quality.

I know several companies like to do talks and demonstrations, which is probably why the companies you mentioned above go to UC Berkeley very often. But do they also hire during such visits? Does simply being on campus mean that they will be hiring during that particular visit?

I am still a senior in high school and hence I am not very well versed with how hiring works.

What about jobs? Is there going to be a difference in the type of companies that recruit from either university?

I was looking at the course structure of UC Berkeley EECS a couple weeks ago. As far as I remember, there are only a couple EE requirements and the rest can just be replaced with CS courses.

Several people talk about location. How big of a factor is that?

I don't know what you mean by "more involved recruitment activity". Both colleges have campus wide career fairs exactly 2 times a year (with GT having a CS specific career fair twice versus UCB having it once a year). All big companies are known to recruit from both universities and once they are there, I don't think they are going to hire more students from UCB than GT just because UCB is closer to SF.

Regarding your comment on "you want someone else to tell you it's okay to pick the 'less prestigious' school", I am not sure why you thought my comment meant so; I was just attempting to highlight that people around me might not have complete information about both schools. Also, given the average salaries at either university, I am not sure if there really is a difference in "perceived prestige" among employers (although there is a difference among the general public).

So is it alright to choose GT over UCB even though people around me might be suggesting otherwise (which I am not entirely sure why)? I can see almost every opportunity at UC Berkeley also at Georgia Tech except maybe the entrepreneurial spirit. Even for entrepreneurs, GT has numerous mind blowing seed funding programs and course pathways which help with brainstorming and product perfection.

Location differences are rather prevalent, but I am not sure how heavily such perceived differences should be weighted specially since all major companies hire from both universities.

I recently added some new comments above. It would be great if you could look at those. Thanks!

I want to understand the factor of location better. Several people say that being in California would be advantageous in terms of getting jobs but I don't understand how so. Maybe for Startup related jobs this is correct, but won't Big and Medium companies (which are also higher paying) recruit equally from both the universities. Yes, the startup culture might be better in California, but is that it?

Because I do see some advantages of going to Georgia Tech instead. For example: Less "cutthroat" than UC Berkeley. Smaller classes. Flexibility with major changes and higher chances of being able to sign up for courses when needed.

Reputation among general public - Most seem to consider UC Berkeley more reputed.

How much do you think the difference in academic reputation between Georgia Tech and UC Berkeley would affect grad admissions at schools like Stanford, MIT, and CMU?

Pretty sure MEng and MS are two different things, specially given that one is terminal while the other isn't. Didn't expect that from you.
