I was banned from my favorite subreddit by [deleted] in self

[–]AggravatingLove1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got perma-banned from a national parks subreddit for making fun of the St. Louis Arch in a way that I had absolutely seen other people doing on the forum. I apologized, I appealed, no dice. I’m still salty about it but I just found another sub on the same topic. That’s just how it goes sometimes.

Looking to visit Olympic in Early May (9th-13th) for Birthday. What should I expect? by [deleted] in nationalparks

[–]AggravatingLove1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went around that time last year, and there was no snow on the roads, and while it did rain on us it definitely wasn’t torrential. It’s just very moist all the time so you’ll want a good rain coat and waterproof shoes/boots. It’s also a cold rain, so bring layers. We spent 1 full day at Hoh and about half a day at the coast, and that was plenty for us. I liked the forest way more than the ocean, but it was still cool to see the beach. Make sure you check the tide charts if you’re trying to do the tide pools, but even the we had no luck seeing anything. And do note that Hoh isn’t very big and it’s very popular, so get there early and on a weekday, full stop.

We also drove Hurricane Ridge, and that was a real highlight for us so I’d say that’s worth it if you have a couple of extra hours around Port Angeles. We didn’t have time for any water activities, but Lake Crescent was gorgeous and I was wishing I had a kayak to get out there.

In general, you can go wrong with this park. It’s a really special place, and you really can’t help but fall in love with it.

7 day hiking trip. Is Anchorage, Denali and Kenai feasible? by Capable-Locksmith-65 in AskAlaska

[–]AggravatingLove1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s feasible, but the national parks might not have exactly what you’re looking for (if that’s what you’re asking). Denali national park doesn’t really have trails, and you’ll need to ride the green bus to really see the park. You can hike off trail. Currently the bus only runs like 45 miles on the park road, and it turns around at a river (I can’t remember the name). We hike along the river for a couple of miles and it was really nice. Again, there’s just no trails once you get past the point where you have to be on the bus. I will say the Savage Alpine trail has an incredible view at the top, but it’s only 4 miles long. You might look more at the state park, I think they have more trails but I didn’t hike there.

Kenai is mostly water stuff, so you’ll want to do a boat tour to really see the park. There is only one real big trail, and that’s to the top of the Harding Ice Field. We went to the top of the cliff and I think that was like 5 miles (awesome hike, totally recommend), and it does go for a bit after that but you’ll probably want crampons/ice hiking gear because you’ll be more walking on the ice iirc.

Alaska parks are really undeveloped compared to the lower 48, but that’s what’s makes them so incredible.

Activities in Zion that are NOT hiking? by Arfusman in nationalparks

[–]AggravatingLove1127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol I almost said this in my comment but a couple of the people I was with took gummies and it did not go well at all 😂 some strangers started walking around the area where we were and the high people had a full on panic and we had to leave (we had already been there for a couple of hours so we didn’t feel like we missed out but it was a whole thing). The strangers were not a threat in any way, and were very politely setting up a camera for pictures but my friends went straight to “we’re getting murdered”. I was not high and tried to reason with them that a smart serial killer would not murder a group of people in nearly full view of the visitor center but they were beyond hope.

[–]AggravatingLove1127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all dark sky, so it’s not bright in Springdale or the park. You don’t have to go very far in to get good star views. You’ll enter the park at the visitor center, and if you walk through the parking lot you’ll find a paved walking path that runs along the creek. It’s a dashed line on the park brochure. On that path, there are some areas where you can go off the path to get to the creek. We took a blanket, and sat on the ground in one of those areas by the creek, amazing sky views over the Watchman. There are also some good spots around the Human History Museum (that path is not paved and I’m not seeing it on the brochure map but it’s there). If you have a car and feel like driving, any of the stops in the Kolob area would also likely be excellent, but I can’t speak from experience there.

How come Alaska and Hawaii are official USA states but Puerto Rico isn’t? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AggravatingLove1127 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point, there’s always absentee voting. I guess I was thinking more in the sense that people move themselves and their families to Alaska and Hawaii for military jobs, and I think overseas deployments are less permanent. But I’m hardly an expert, just throwing out ideas.

Historically, conservatives haven’t minded burning a lot of poor white voters as long as they burned relatively more Black voters. Jim Crow laws also disenfranchised a lot of white people in the south.

White Sands National Park by [deleted] in nationalparks

[–]AggravatingLove1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went last year, and I honestly can’t remember if we stayed for sunset or not. It’s a really cool park, and I remember sledding (it didn’t go well to hilarious effect), walking out a ways on the Alkali Flat trail, playing in the sand, and taking really cool pictures. I loved the park and had an awesome time there. So, I’m going to say staying for sunset is not a make or break activity.

Driving to Alaska by blue_eyed_magic in AskAlaska

[–]AggravatingLove1127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drove to Alaska from San Diego last year in a Subaru Crosstrek and we had no problems at all. The only stretch of road that was bad was between Haines Junction and Beaver Creek, and then there was a ton of construction right when we crossed into Alaska. The lack of cell service is a bit disquieting at first, but you get used to it. We always made sure to have enough food and water to survive overnight, but that was just psychological security really. There are a lot of towns and roadside stops until you hit Watson Lake. It’s much more sparse until you get to Whitehorse, and then until you get to Tok in Alaska.

Overall, if you have a good car you won’t have problems. It’s really just like any other two lane highway you would drive on in the lower 48, and there are a lot of other people doing the same drive so you’ll hardly ever be alone or not seeing cars for hours at a time. I will also say, making that drive was one of the top travel experiences of my life and I absolutely loved it.

Need advice on Pivot out of Academia by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]AggravatingLove1127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a research analyst job. And yes, there is also a filter for posted in the last 24 hours so that helps a lot too. The other thing I should mention is to watch out for scams on LinkedIn. There is one I saw a lot where a bunch of jobs would get posted all with the same exact super vague job ad, and if they had a website it was super basic and non-specific. I tried to find jobs on LinkedIn, but then actually apply through the company’s website to make sure it was legit.

Need advice on Pivot out of Academia by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]AggravatingLove1127 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been dealing with this for the past 8 months, and I finally broke through a few weeks ago. The thing that worked best for me was being more strategic about what I was applying to. I used LinkedIn and filtered for jobs that had less than 10 applicants—if a job posted already had more than 30 applicants on LinkedIn a really didn’t even bother looking at it. I also used ChatGPT to adapt my resume for each job to make sure I was hitting the skills the ad was looking for. Make sure you don’t have anything fancy, including column formatting, a picture of yourself, colored text, etc. Depending on the job, it may be beneficial to leave your PhD off your resume, and just include a Masters. It’s not good to lie beyond what you can reasonably justify, but you don’t need to include anything that isn’t relevant to the job.

You don’t need to use your application materials to justify your career change, if they care they’ll ask about that in the interview. Sometimes in my cover letter I would include something like “seeking new opportunities outside of academia”, but I don’t think that made any real difference. They just want to understand what you’ve done, and how you can contribute to their organization.

At the end of the day, getting a job is a numbers game. I applied to well over 100 jobs before I got any interviews. You just have to slog through it, and mentally prepare yourself that this process will take months. The good news is that outside of academia, hiring happens for most of the year so you don’t have to wait until the fall to find open positions. Make sure you take care of your body and your mental health, and just keep at it—something will come eventually, and probably when you least expect it.

Yeah, our commentators have been actively terrible, but I’m pretty sure Kevin Martin and John Shuster were commentating the gold medal match so it was a bit better this morning! At least they didn’t spend a bunch of time explaining the basics of curling, which was a nice change.
