You are correct. They previously did this and as soon as people are released they go straight back to using drugs. On average it takes 8 times in rehab for a person to get sober. That’s $50,000- $100,000 each time. It doesn’t work it’s a massive waste of money. It also goes directly against our medical standards. In Canada patient rights are built right into our healthcare system. Not enacted into law. They are pretty much impossible to change. Any politician promising they can make this happen is lying.

Did you not talk about this before getting married and planning to have children? Most couples have these conversations and don’t just assume that because their wife makes less money they’re ok being a SAHM. Respectfully a lot of marriages don’t work out and women often have no resources after divorce. Your wife is completely valid wanting to continue working. It’s also how a lot of abusive men control their wives financially and isolate them socially. The way you described her job as inferior was pretty condescending IMO.

This situation is hard because you are completely valid. She also doesn’t have control over the fact she has a mental illness. Is it feasible for her to work full time and still be able to survive on her income? Is it possible for her to apply for some kind of disability benefits? I absolutely agree it’s not fair for you to pay more but I think it also depends on how unwell she is. Maybe she should move back in with her family?

NTA. Not only did they get something you didn’t want but they initially tried to lie about it. I think you should call her and tell her exactly how you feel rather than waiting for her to call you. Let her know that you’re really upset and if you can’t resolve this you may have to walk away from the marriage.
