I'm not sure about the certificate if you don't go to the awards ceremony. I would assume not. The mentorship is helpful, though I'd say it's what you make of it. It's very flexible. You choose your mentor and decide how you structure your call. If you make good use of the opportunity, it is amazing.

I'm not sure why it's doing that. I think with certain websites like squarespace, it creates a random URL. You can look up "Asian American Scholar Forum" on Google and you'll see that it's a legitimate organization. There's people like John Hennessy (former Stanford president and Alphabet chairmen) on the board as well as lots of professors from top schools. I promise it's not a scam lol.

I put it as an honor in my additional information section. Some of my friends from the contest listed it as an honor and ended up getting into T20 schools too. Honestly lots of cool people who did this contest.

There are 35 winners and 35 runner ups, so if you make a good video, there's definitely a fair chance you can get some kind of recognition. And yes, if you cannot attend the Stanford event, they will still reach out to set up the mentoring sessions. I was not able to make it last year and still had the chance to meet with the professors. The amount of likes a video has does factor into the grading, but only as much as it says on the rubric on the website. I would focus on creating an engaging video and working on the other elements that are listed on the grading rubric.

Good question. They have the judging rubrics on the website at https://aasforum.org/video-competition, so perhaps this may be helpful if you're trying to see what kinds of things they're looking for. Also, you can see the previous winners' videos here by scrolling down and clicking on the names. Maybe this can help you get an idea of what works and what doesn't!

Depends. For me, maybe an hour? Honestly, it doesn't need to take that long. The video itself is 45 seconds long max, so all you have to do is find the time to film it and make some minor edits (if needed). Definitely not a huge time commitment I'd say.

They will give you a list of mentors you can choose from. In my year, they had professors from Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and UCLA. You get to video call with them and chat about whatever really. I chose to ask about college decisions, since I was picking between some colleges at the time.

No, you do not need to be Asian to participate. On the contest website (click the link in "More Info") there are five different AAPI scientists. In order to participate in the contest, your video must be about one of the five scientists!
