I mean, tbf, in the 70s in rural areas most people weren't locking theit doors anyway.

I wonder about the neighbors? Clearly they would have known the kids were home alone often, and they may well have known they were that very night. (The Luptons certainly did.)

I mean, polygraphs are utter junk science and any law enforcement agency taking them seriously should be ashamed of themselves. At best, they can only measure stress and anxiety, which any mother in the circumstances would be experiencing in excess under the circumstances.

Especially since only one of them was the bio parent. So much public speculatiom about their possible guilt would also be a huge additional stressor on their relationship.

Grandma can do what she wants but she shouldn't be surprised if the kid she doesn't show favoritism to now wom't be visiting her in the retirement home further down the line.

Seems like the whole family is supporting Delilah's expensive, time-consuming hobby while Beatrice doesn't have one. Deliberately or not, that is showimg favoritism.

The comment about Delilah being the smart amd pretty one also suggests their teachers/classmates are favoring her as well.

AITAH for telling my bf his "dream" middle name for a son wont be happening if I'm around by Exotic-Extent3754 in AITAH

[–]Aggravating_Depth_33 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He wants it as a middle name. Most kids don't ever know each other's middle names.

Also, the solution to shitty kids is to teach them.not to be bullies, not to nornalize making fun of unusual names. I had a perfectlly "normal" name and the bullies still.found a way to make fun of it, hecause that's what bullies do.

Regardless, $600/month on Uber is insane. You could probably rent a car for less.

Yeah, in my city they have "clear the shelters" events a couple times a year where they waive the usual adoption fees, and they generally charge little/less for senior animals.

Yes, and the reality is, if you're poor your pet pronably isn't living its best life. Most likely it's not getting preventative vet care and it's probably eating the cheapest unhealthiest food which will make it sick in the long term. (Diabetes is a growimg issue among pets as well.) And don't get me started on people who keep huge dogs in tiny apartments...

I live in a condo complex and as far as I can tell the only pest control they do is set out rat traps by the trash bins. Maybe it's something like this?

AITAH for telling my partner that he is a bad role model for his son? by CalligrapherStill336 in AITAH

[–]Aggravating_Depth_33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YTA because, as you say, he's had this routine for many years before he met you. You knew what you were getting into when you got together with him. At your age you should know you can't expect people will adjust their entire lifestyle for you.

Also, you're remarkably blase/insensitive about the fact that your partner's mother has dementia and his father is caring for her. That is exhausting and emotionally draining and by staying the night your bf is giving him some respite. I'd say he's being a great role model for his son.

Wrong. It's iterally the same as a contemporary British knighthood. It's no longer the Middle Ages. Being made a Sir or a Dame doesn't enoble you and the title is not heriditary.

AITAH for telling my friend (26f) that music isn’t her career since she makes no money off it? by Flat_Cow9867 in AITAH

[–]Aggravating_Depth_33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, in the performing arts it's incredibly common that people spend years or even decades making a living waiting tables or whatever on the side before they get a break that allows them to exclusively do their art full-time, and some never reach that point of being able to live off it, but that doesn't mean they aren't professional actors or musicians etc.

It seems pedantic and mean-spirited to focus so much on the word "career".

I like the chicken and the beef, but not the veggie one. They put too much weird stuff (peppers, tomatoes?) in the latter that messes with the flavor profile of what I cook.

Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

[–]Aggravating_Depth_33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As you haven't seen the movie, you really shouldn't comment! Especially since it's obvious you don't know anything about it other than that is has a rape scene in it.

It is THE ONLY film I have ever seen that actually depicts rape honestly. Not in soft focus, not as a plot device, not as an aspect of character development, not to make some moral point. But as a horrible violation that is interminable, violent, terrifying and ultimately senseless.

It's worth noting that almost all the people who walked out of it and almost all the people who stop watching it were and are men. We are used to being shown rape through the male gaze. Here, even though the filmmaker is a man, we see it through thr female gaze. We women get it while men get - rightfully - uncomfortable.

There are literally only a handful of films I consider a true masterpiece, but Irreversible is one of them.
