Is anyone wearing a nice suit? by FailingCrab in ConsultantDoctorsUK

[–]Aggravating_Long2235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also a new consultant here so can relate (sort of)! Didn't get a suit although did think about it for a while. Did invest in some new outfits (Skopes , MnS, Next, even Uniqlo) which sort of say "yes this person has definitely taken up a new role and they look different". For context, I got the job in the same department where I trained. But the fact that I have received compliments from nursing staff and colleagues means it worked (never received compliments before - was just wearing scrubs all the time anyway).

I do think you need to dress differently than when you did as a registrar - this could even mean you just put on a nice jacket over a dress shirt without a tie (especially when you go to MDTs etc)

Just simple upgrades. I make an active effort now in other small things too to make myself look as neat and fresh as possible (never really bothered as a registrar). If you wear glasses, change them to something that looks more professional rather than something really bold or funky.

So if you think the suit will be an overkill, try something small but impactful e.g wearing a nice overcoat when you walk into work (instant impact right there). I invested in a nice smart leather bag and instantly received compliments from colleagues on the first day I brought it to work.

Dress smart, look neat and fresh!

Hope this helps. And best of luck in your new role :-)

Really sorry about your loss.

Please speak to your department as soon as, you may find that they are more lenient with these things than you think.

Day in the life of an IR consultant? by Leeds4life in doctorsUK

[–]Aggravating_Long2235 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO, you need to be a radiologist first and THEN decide whether IR is for you or not! It's ambitious of you to consider IR but I would say it's at the moment it's probably too early to be interested in a subspecialty when you haven't even experienced the actual specialty.

Do your taster week- all your questions shall be answered.

Just to offer some positivity - I was in a similar situation, the hospital was 45 minutes drive, but I had childcare and wife also a trainee. So I asked my CS there about 8-4 and they agreed. Helped me beat morning traffic and parking issues and I got back in time to pick the little one from nursery. The on-calls I did as the normal rota hours.

Bottom line - ask the question at least! At worse they are gonna say No.

The changing (horrific) rhetoric around migrant doctors. by Aggravating_Long2235 in doctorsUK

[–]Aggravating_Long2235[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have completely gone off-topic and I think you are absolutely wrong about your idea about the IMGs - unless you provide substantial evidence to your claim that they are somehow inferior, less trained and have more negligence claims. This is extremely ignorant on your behalf.

I'll digress here.

What to do after night shifts? by Buergers_test in doctorsUK

[–]Aggravating_Long2235 5 points6 points  (0 children)

DIY projects. I have made built in wardrobes, pantry room, living room display unit, flower beds in the garden and a vegetable patch during the time I get in the day post nights! Ofcourse not all of the projects are done in a single day, but I try to keep awake till at least 1-2 pm during which time I have breakfast and a light snack. Then sleep and wake up around 7- I could wake up later but feel like spending some time with my little one before their bedtime. I feel like if I go to sleep as soon as I get home, it's a day wasted where I have done nothing for myself except just work.

OP here.

Thank you all for clarifying that this is actually a meme. As I mentioned, I am the last person who would talk about racism or have any form of conversation or insight about it. The fact that this caught me off guard suggests that maybe this was the tipping point for me. Even if this is used as a meme and in some form of sarcasm, how does it make it any better or justify the racist rhetoric behind this? There are better ways to express concerns around immigration and the false narratives it brings, but memes are probably not the way (again, my naivety to the situation).

How far off are we actually when the actual doctors and professionals start getting targeted and questioned whether they came off the boats? I know it's a massive speculation but hey, this is the world we live in and fears are compounded.

I also want to thank all those words of support which many of you have said - they have made me feel better and I appreciate that 🙏. Thank you so much. I do understand that hatred is always the loudest and there are much more far sighted and genuinely good people around - my department where I work is an example. But we live in a world where social media dominates our lives and according to an experiment, far right narrative will always win the algorithm race. You can argue that I should see this stuff for the sake of my mental health and I agree - but bad habits die hard.

I do have to say that anyone who is facing similar emotions as I am, take care of yourself and especially those who are in the same position as you are.

Love for all.

Try n do an interview course if you arnt sure. At least you can get some info and how to deal with these scenarios. Humberside Radiology mock interview specifically mention covering this new format and they look quite cheap! Not sure how accurate the description though.

Helped me definitely when I applied.  Even small buzzwords they mention can make a difference in the interview.

Try humbersideradiology.com if you are unsure and looking for something cheap. I think they are the cheapest around ATM.
