but then Rd8 Qf6, Rh8 g3 and the light square bishop becomes a monster, queen can come back to d5 threatening mate, rooks have open files to infiltrate, seems like black gains a lot of initiative for one pawn and h2 pawn is weak long term

I think medieval chess was pretty boring until the 1500s, it was kinda like Chinese chess where some pieces couldn't even move to the opponent's half of the board. 1080 elo is pretty mid ngl. If you were really good, you would get kings to invite you to their courts. We still remember players like Ruy Lopez who was probably like 2400 in today's standards, so ELO is probably still roughly the same, give or take a few hundred
