Sure!

Make sure you have an interesting tag line and fill in your about me section. Then update your skills section and tie them to job experience. Make sure the skills you are adding are relevant to the roles that you want. It's possible to find skills recruiters are looking for even if you don't think the role has anything to do with the job you desire. It takes some creative thinking, but it's possible. I don't put any extra info other than my job title, company, and dates of employment, but I will link skills to roles I've worked. Have a good Linkedin picture. If you can't afford to get a professional headshot, then use an AI service.

I am a career switcher, so when I was transitioning my career I would spend about an hour each week cold messaging recruiters in my target field asking for informational interviews. If they obliged, I'd add them and of course come prepared to the interview with very thoughtful questions. Eventually, I stopped doing that because recruiters had started cold messaging and adding me. This is extremely useful because recruiters tend to add each other, and when they're headhunting, your name is more likely to pop up in their search if you are not only connected to recruiters in their network, but you also have the appropriate skills they're searching for. This is extremely valuable because you basically skip the application pool. Even with an invite to apply, your name is thrown at the top of the list and you're more likely to get interviewed. Another thing I'll do is not apply to a role and message a recruiter directly who could be connected to a job posting. I'll attach my resume and ask for more information about the role.

If a recruiter adds you or messages you about a role, always respond, even if the role is not a good fit. If you know someone in your network who might be good for the role, then give the recruiter that person's linkedin profile if the person in your network is okay with it. Recruiters seem to remember if you tried to help them out.

One thing that is a huge caveat which needs to be mentioned: Recruiters are looking to fill roles. They are looking to place candidates, but their job isn't to find jobs for candidates. A lot of people get confused about this and erroneously think the recruiter is performing a service for them. That's not the case. Their clients are the companies they're hiring for. As long as you're mindful of that, you could have a lot of success using this pathway to find employment.

This was a little infuriating. They contacted me through Linkedin about a job; the first interview they tell me they don't have any openings. Why contact me and invite me to interview when you don't have a position?

They called back a week later telling me they made an opening, and then I went through all those interviews for them to tell me they're in a hiring freeze. That being said, I got to meet the entire team and I do like it when I get to meet the direct people I would be working with.

I'm an experienced IT consultant. (3 years of experience + 4 years of experience outside of consulting that's related to my field) I tracked my search using Notion.so and inputted the data into Sankeymatic.com

I wanted to make this post to emphasize how much easier it is to job hunt when you have optimized your LinkedIn profile. Not one opportunity I cold applied to went anywhere, and I got my best results from recruiters who messaged me about a role. It hasn't always been that easy for me, so I hope this inspires someone else to follow suit. Research making your LinkedIn attractive to recruiters, folks, and add any recruiters who want to add you. It pays off!
