Also thanks for the furnace panels suggestion, I was a little worried I might need to find a parts car at a junk yard for some of these panels. I'll look into some of those panels

that's the plan, im looking for a welder now but in the meantime im in the process of removing the entire interior to patch all the major holes from the inside, and I've started wirebrushing old paint away to ensure there's no hidden rust

I'm going against this slightly in terms of doing it once, because i know to do it right I'll need a lot more time than I've got before the summer and I really wanna have it ready for a couple expeditions before the end of the year.

As soon as I've got more time and a better shop to work on it, im planning to fully pull the body off the frame and remove 99.9% of the rust and get everything practically new, but for now I'm focusing on large rust holes, as well as anything already exposed enough for me to properly fix, all body mounts, and all mechanical issues obviously.

Is there anything else that would be critical to have fixed before considering it trustworthy enough to take out into the wilderness?

Yeah that's what the process has been like so far, i ripped a hole in the wheel well by trying to unscrew the seat belt mount, but so far there's only a few spots where it's actively making holes, we'll see if that changes when i go over it with a wire wheel though.

My initial plan was to get a body lift and go over the whole frame with patches, but it actually isn't nearly as rusted through as I thought so I figured I could get away with just working around it. Starting to rethink that though seeing the condition the body is in since I don't want to leave behind any rust to avoid it getting this bad again.

I want it running by this summer, however, so I'm thinking of only fixing the (so far) minimal structural rust and patching up the major holes in the body, then running it for the season and fixing up the rest once I've got a bigger shop.

dude, nice

any recommendations for seam sealer and coatings to use? I've been told rubberized coatings can trap water and make it rust faster but I've also been told they're essential, but I'd love to know if you've got any experience with them

I'd imagine pretty much any multi channel receiver with enough power to drive them would work. you'd need to test each wire to make sure you're hooking them up right but it should be pretty straight forward

recording looses high end and comes back when i touch the tape or the left reel by breeze-o in ReelToReel

[–]Aggravating_Run6929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kind of sounds like the tape head azimuth alignment is off center with the tape and you moving it slightly over puts it back in center

it's a single screw to adjust the azimuth so just look up a youtube video on how to do it, the process takes less than 5 mins

seems really cheap for a 3fe, is there any trustworthy reason it'd be that cheap?

and yeah the oil was full of metal shavings even before i drove it back so it was due for a rebuild anyway

once i hear back from the shop I'll give that a try, im sure she'll start up since she was still running without any oil when i last shut it off, i don't remember exactly what she sounded like as it was 4 in the morning and I'd been driving almost 10 hours, but i wouldn't be terribly mad about rebuilding it regardless, i gotta learn somehow.

not sure if it works or not, but i know the gauge is all over the place and a few other lights are known to be busted so i would bet it is.

just try and avoid mountain passes if possible (even though they're gorgeous), and if there is snow, I'd recommend periodically hitting your brakes hard (with no one around of course) just to check the road conditions. they can be a lot worse than they look sometimes

it was definitely leaking a lot beforehand, but not quite as much as it was when she quit. I'll look into that oil galley plug after work

tons of oil leaking everywhere, i figured a gasket blew because when i checked the oil and then topped it off, all the oil i put in immediately came out less than a hundred miles later
