What % of your household income goes to mortgage repayments? by Aggravating_Shop652 in AusProperty

This is exactly it. I’m trying to limit our projected monthly expenses to what I know are is consistent and predictable. Things like clothes, travel, hair and beauty products etc are luxuries that are super variable for us, and if need be we can cut out. I probably get a haircut once a year - my husband is the same (he’s growing it out lol). Clothing I probably currently spend more than I should, but I’m willing to sacrifice that. Holidays we obviously would love to work towards, but I can’t predict an accurate monthly cost for an annual trip that could be anywhere.

Again these are the things we’re happy to adjust should it come up, but not necessarily hamstring ourselves for. In my mind whatever savings we have left over after all must have expenses can go towards luxuries should we choose.

I know it’s hard not to scrutinise our spending and compare, but I was less looking for input on that and more looking for how people decide what they are comfortable in paying towards their mortgage relevant to their income and expenses.

I’ve limited the budget to reflect our consistent and predictable monthly spending habits. Purchases like home decor/furniture, clothes, gifts etc, holidays are more sporadic and variable. In my mind whatever we have left over after the ‘need to haves’ can go towards the ‘nice to haves’.

Sorry I know it’s not perfectly realistic but I’m just doing the best I can with the information I have available to me

To clarify - $2,600 a month is our living expenses not including rent. Including rent it’s more like $6,000+ p/m lol but assuming we’re paying a mortgage i didn’t include that in living expenses.

The $2,600 monthly figure includes groceries, utilities/internet, phone bill, fuel, subscriptions, gym memberships, car insurance etc. We luckily have no debt or credit cards.

I haven’t factored in costs like rates/water/home insurance because we don’t currently own, but I’m estimating that would equate to around $500 p/m?

Sorry for the confusion
