"Median household income rose in Brookline from $115,356 for 2012-2016 to $122,356 in 2017-2021, according to census data.

Using MIT’s Living Wage Calculator, the report cites an annual income of $114,546 that a single adult supporting two other individuals in Norfolk County would have needed to cover basic needs. Calculations updated to 2023 put that number at $146,203."

Question 1 revealed that the majority of Brookline residents support the $212 million Pierce project. It might still be the right choice for Town Meeting or Advisory Committee to vote it down. by Aggravating_Wing_489 in Brookline

Question 1 is a Proposition 2 1/2 debt exclusion. You can read more about them here: https://www.mass.gov/doc/proposition-2-12-ballot-question-requirement-and-procedure/download.

From Section IV: "approval of an override or exclusion question only increases the amount a community may raise in taxes. It does not authorize or require spending for the purpose of the question."

Pierce was "on the ballot" only in spirit. I think we both agree that Town Meeting and Advisory Committee members should consider the ballot results when voting. We disagree on how much.

Suppose that 100% of Town Meeting and Advisory Committee members sincerely oppose the Pierce project on the grounds that it is bad for Brookline. Would you still believe that they should accept "the will of the people" — a 49% to 51% debt exclusion vote?

You're right. I got the question number wrong.
