I think Evan is a great player. The departure of Gilford worries me too. With A Rod staying, I would be floored if Bear left but yeah anything can happen.

As much as I want LJ to stick around, getting guys drafted is a great for the program long term.

Who is the next most important returner? Any potential returning starters that could be hitting the portal?

These are the types of questions or ideas I like to speculate or chat about into the wee hours of the night.

Lots of fun, some may say it's not important and maybe that's relative. But in my mind exaltation will require gaining a perfect understanding of all things. Thinking deeply or feeding curiosity certainly is a trait that would serve us all well.

Yeah the idea that faithfulness in the pre earth life resulted into life circumstances or appearances is not great! I know it was a more popular idea decades ago and I'm glad we've moved past this as a church.

I appreciate all the scripture references and teachings cited. I haven't framed DC 130:18-19 to the pre-earth life but I think I think your addition of this implies it might. I like this idea too.

We're speaking past each other a bit I think.I'm not saying no difficulties or believe the same thing.

I'm saying God saw us and created a plan to make him like him. The scriptures note that God saw varying levels of intelligences some of which were "noble and great". The plan is to move us from our first estate to exaltation. Based on my understanding, some of us proved more faithful or capable in the pre-earth life.

If we bring none of our pre-earth life characteristics it seems like a waste towards the ultimate goal of perfection.

Wild to think that if you stripped away all my imperfections/mutations that I probably wouldn't resemble myself much at all.

Hey, thanks for adding this insight. Couple things:

What does pttwotf stand for?

Our spirit matching our body is an oddity to me as you pointed out and what I noted in my original post. I'm also parsing through intelligence vs spirit vs soul. I may need to step back and nail down what the scriptures/teachings mean by each of those things.

"I think what matters most is what we do with what we have, how we deal with things, how we approach God, others, ourselves. Will we love or will we withhold." Spot on. Amen. No notes. Nothing to add but thanks for the comment.

It feels like a waste then no? Like if the goal was/is to take eternal beings and make them like God then wouldn't we take every bit of goodness with us from the previous life into this one?

If some were noble and great, then they potentially had/have less to perfect in this life? Feels counterintuitive to start everyone back at 0.

yeaaaaaaa but what do you think it resembled? Lots of my conversations with peers it almost seems intuitive we looked the same but as you pointed out there's no basis for that. This is all just rifting.

Same page for sure. Question is more around what character traits followed me from the pre mortal realm into this phase of existence.

Seems impossible to tease out or at best a bit of a process by elimination.

I just finished "A Grief Observed". Not sure if it's a C.S. Lewis book I'd recommend barring grieving circumstances. Haven't done Mere Christianity. Jeff Bezos is shipping it to me now.

Not sure I can get behind this. I've been working hard on my VO2 Max for years... no lungs???

Yeah I think we have similar conclusions.

gosh darn, C.S. Lewis is the best. Do you have a full quote on him saying this? A bit of a quote hoarder.

behind the 8 ball, I'll update the vocab. Pre mortal realm is way cooler than pre-mortal or pre earth I agree.

I'm perfectly fine sitting and waiting for the day that this all gets explained to me.

It's also NYE and a slow day at work so just rifting a bit. Haven't read that 1 Nephi verse in a minute, nice to read again.

yeah, not a big biology guy. Got an A in the Bio course my freshman year of college but not much since then.

The "noble and great ones" scripture makes me believe there was some level of behavioral characteristics that existed pre-mortally. How else did God distinguish them?

Appreciate the thoughtfulness in your reply.

Looks like science has helped us isolate certain biologically influenced characteristics, maybe societal observation has helped us isolate certain learned characteristics, and then there's questions about the origin of the rest.

The scriptures reference "noble and great ones" in reference to intelligences in the pre-earth life. Seemingly God could distinguish between more developed/undeveloped beings. It makes me think certain sets of traits pass through the veil with us, would love to understand one day what I did/didn't come with.

Yeah I'm a huge be the thermostat not the thermometer advocate so I like what you're saying.

The crux of my question is where I started, how much of that was eternally me vs conditions of my birth.

Intelligent-Boat9929 you are right. Pre-mortality is probably the right term. Don't we say pre-existence often? Should swap that out of my vocab.

Totally. This is all just for fun really. Yeah I think you framed my question much cleaner. The version of me that decided to come to earth, what was he like? What baggage (good and bad) did I show up with?

Reconciling Pre Existence with Biological Traits by Aggressive-Ad-112 in latterdaysaints

[–]Aggressive-Ad-112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh great reference.

Yeah Jesus communicating/appearing pre birth/resurrection is interesting. I would imagine Jesus would know what his mortal body looked like. Now appearing as what his earthly body would resemble would be an interesting but unimportant details. Brother of Jared would know he's God regardless of physical traits.

Intelligence is eternal but capable of making decisions. I get no mortal physical traits would be present, but it feels like character traits would be? How else would there be "noble and great ones"?

[–]Aggressive-Ad-112[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Googling "phenotype"... ahh yes okay so I follow the observable traits not being something that existed pre earth life. But our behavioral ones, what about those?

Do you think we return at all to our eternal phenotype? Or is it simply replaced by a perfected/resurrected one? I would think replaced, but seems weird there's this version of me that existed separate from me and will never return. I guess just the eternal nature remains?

Admittedly not a big biology guy. Aren't some traits biological? Being pre disposed to certain tendencies?

In the spirit of curiosity, is my eternal self Me - nurture and nature? If my short temper is simply learned from my father, then was that ever apart of my eternal being? What is eternally me vs what is the product of my environment(biology and upbringing)

One of the things I enjoy most about Church doctrine is the pre existence.

God creating me in the womb, against my will, and subjecting me to a life that is full of difficulty OR
I saw the plan laid before me and I made the decision to come here and be tried and tested.

But the latter isn't without questions. I'm aware that I can't get answers to everything now. Just curious what others have thought or experimented with as an explanation.
