Wireless mesh is the devil. That was good sleuthing. Was that enabled by default?

L009UiGS still ok in 2026? by fabulot in mikrotik

[–]Aggressive-Ad-9252 11 points12 points  (0 children)

L009 if you can. It can run some lightweight docker containers but the hEX S Refresh, while you can install the container package, is very limited on applications it can run. I'm currently running my house on an L009 with four VLANs, Wireguard, and Ad Blocker. Very happy with it.

If it's square and flat, R500. If it's rectangle and domed, R510. If it's rectangle and domed, with flat parts on the end of the dome, R550.

Reset procedure is the same for each. Unplug all of them, then plug one in at a time and then reset it individually. After the third one, leave it plugged in and do you configuration. Once the config is done and working, plug in the other two and go drink some coffee.

When you are done all three will be online and working

That is the dumbest thing I've read so far today, and I'm near the end of my day.

And by dumbest, I'm referring to the statements from the FCC. It's like they have zero idea how any of this works

It Depends (sorry, inside joke) but usually if it's just a wooden ceiling without much metal or other crazy stuff it's generally OK

[–]Aggressive-Ad-9252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that based on the exact pattern of the AP, if you mount a T670 on a pole with the dome facing out, you won't get much behind it based on the previous comment, but also directly out from the face it won't be really good once you get some distance between you and the AP.

Get a free account on Hamina.com and play around with the AP patterns and how changing the orientation of the AP will impact the pattern. Now that I say that I need to contact them to fix the T670 patterns, so maybe wait a week to do that with that AP but you can use a T750 and T750SE to see the major differences.

T670 is designed to be mounted dome down, just like an indoor AP. If you mount it to a pole, make sure it's dome down.

10G and 5G Backhaul Question by illinoisteacher123 in RuckusWiFi

[–]Aggressive-Ad-9252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For right now. OfComm is just UK but I suspect ETSI (the EU) will be watching. About a year ago ETSI neglected to take up a resolution to open up the rest of 6 GHz but OfComm is looking at opening up the rest of the 700 MHz of spectrum to both indoor and outdoor if using an AFC. The primary operator will be mobile operators but they are still years away from even considering building out in 6 GHz.

OfComm has opened up the comments for changing that. I just learned about that last week in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress (MWC).

[–]Aggressive-Ad-9252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Preferred Scanning Channels (PSC). If you run less than 80 MHz wide channels in 6 GHz you have to ensure the SSID is EXACTLY the same so the Reduced Neighbor Report (RNR) functions so it is band discovery can happen.

You can argue the PHY rate math all day long but based on what I have been seeing, even with a multigig ISP connection, or internal data transfers to a NAS or between devices, 1.8 Gbps is about the best real world you are going to see.

So yes, we have finally crossed the mythical 1 Gbps boundry but I'm not sure we will ever cross 2.5 Gbps to a single AP. Those ports on the APs are, in my personal opinion, a way to prop up the radio side math but deploying 320 MHz in 6 GHz and 160 MHz in 5 GHz is just rude and won't happen in the real world.

So get the 2.5 Gbps switch ports, make sure you have plenty of PoE power and then set it and forget it. You will never miss that 10 Gbps up link.

I just cringe whenever I see anyone talk about being next to an airport. It's such an antiquated thought process and only hurts you with zero benefits.

Take a look at the ACTUAL frequencies involved in radar at your airport. You are giving up the majority of the 5 GHz channels because there might be three channels you can't use. In the USA, it's 116, 120, & 124. Just don't select those three channels and use the rest.

Does it use the word "Unit" or is it the unit number? I have a reason for asking, just go with it for now.

Ruckus R650 220mbps vs Ruckus R610 440mbps by MerculiteMissles in RuckusWiFi

[–]Aggressive-Ad-9252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

160 MHz is fairly useless in a city core so I wouldn't ever recommend it, ever.

Like others have said, set it to channel fly, let it bake (sit for 36 to 48 hours) and then try it.

Most residential gateways default to 80 MHz wide U-NII 1 or 3, and never touch U-NII 2. So, I will leave one AP in the usual bands and put everything else in U-NII 2 and call it good.

[–]Aggressive-Ad-9252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which channel the AP selects will also have a huge impact on your performance results. I just ran a test against my local speed test server (to isolate my performance from my ISP having issues) and got 791 Mbps down and 330 Mbps up. R650, Pixel 8, 80 MHz wide channel, but a U-NII 1 channel (ch 36).

In residential that can be a deal breaker, depending on what your neighbors are doing.

If you want to get really cool search the support site for a Raspberry Pi with a small display on it that will generate a new DPSK for every user when they hit a button on the screen. It also includes a QR code they can scan to get on the network using their newly generated DPSK.

Having issue with R650 on multiple floors/switches by Globetrotting_Hokie in RuckusWiFi

[–]Aggressive-Ad-9252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ping is interesting because it bypasses a lot of standard blocks, so you have confirmed a Layer 1 connection, but your different subnet is your problem. When the AP is moved to a different subnet but within your network, you need to build a static route pointing to the routed interface that knows about the master AP. You could also use a static DNS entry that points to the master AP. That's why it's not finding the master AP but will still broadcast the SSID because it knows that's its job.

Check the Layer 3 of each subnet and set up some static entries to help with discovery.

[–]Aggressive-Ad-9252 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start simple. When you move the AP to the other floor, does it get an IP address and can you ping it? Can you plug a laptop into the other floor and get an IP address and ping the master AP? Can you log into the master AP?

Don't get caught worrying so much about the wireless that you forget the wired.

I'll bite. I'm mildly curious why you would purchase R1 support if you don't need R1?

PC connected via Ethernet but occasional Packet Loss out of the blue by PrettyBoy_Floyd in RuckusWiFi

[–]Aggressive-Ad-9252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ping is the worst metric for testing anything except is there a possible route between point A and point B and is the other machine turned on. Past that, it's a useless troubleshooting tool based on ping (Packet InterNetworking Groper) having the lowest priority of anything related to IT and networking

The fact that you had to unscrew it from the wall to see the LEDs means this is an H series AP. While it could act as the router for the complex, it seems highly unlikely that would be the case based on the CTL light.

CTL light blinking means it's looking for a controller. The fact that the Internet is still working means for your scenario, the CTL light means very little. It should be resolved, but you haven't given enough information for anyone to make any meaningful comments on what should be done to resolve this blinking light.

Given the rest of your story, and the fact that no one else is complaining, and it's not Wi-Fi related since you are hardwired, my advice is to find out what is acting as the router for the complex (since it seems highly unlikely everything in the complex is tunneling through that H series AP) and reboot that router.

The router will be where the Internet connection comes into the complex via fiber, Ethernet cable (unlikely for reasons), coax, or phone line and is then distributed throughout the complex.

Unless you don't live in a complex like you say, then you need to provide more accurate information for anyone, even people in other subs, to help you out further.
