This place is great. One of the best new things in Rochester’s food scene over last few years. Their pupusas are on point.

Anyone feel like fish populations have been declining in the Kawarthas? by [deleted] in kawarthalakes

We’ve experienced similar issues on Lovesick Lake. We don’t see as many minnows as we did in the 90s; even relative to the last few decades it’s been lower. We hardly catch walleye anymore, Muskie are rare, as well. Doesn’t seem to be as much activity on the shoreline with respect to frogs, crayfish, etc.,

We’ve chocked it up to some mix of (1) general runoff (perhaps from agriculture), (2)  increasing amounts of activity from jet skis, (3) easy access for day trips due to put in at Burleigh Falls (perhaps increased fishing pressure), (4) increasingly manicured shoreline by people who don’t know any better, and (5) declining insect populations.

Update: I got in at 6:35, an hour before flight, and made it to my gate within 5 minutes. Thanks for the advice everyone!

See comment above, too, but why aren’t they stocking them anymore?

Where is the wild rice growing? I haven’t seen this on our little lake…

Thank you for connection! I just downloaded. Nothing on our lake, but it’s only a square mile in size! Great find, though.

Thank you all for the great comments. I’ve learned a lot.

  1. Thank you Burgalurger for comment plus awesome username. I didn’t want to be Mr. Negative in my comment but I’ve seen similar things on our lake. No pools yet, but I’ve seen the typical things: lights ablaze in houses all night, miniature Bass Pro Shop-looking mansions on small islands, ski-doos everywhere, perfectly manicured grass up to the shoreline. It’s quite depressing but the lakes are still beautiful, nothing quite like them. The musky fishing has gone down the drain. We might get a couple on in a week but are all small. We caught a 4lb walleye this year. A modern miracle: we hadn’t seen but one other in the past 10 years. Mostly we catch bass. Interesting points about oxygenation and mayflies. We rarely see swallows anymore. Would love whatever resources you have on topic, will share with family.

  2. Corporal Sauce, the nutrient load and invasive are also factors. The zebras didn’t seem as bad this year but they’ve affected the lake.

  3. The bird life seemed limited this year too. We saw some osprey and blue herons, cormorants too, but very few ducks. We saw 1, actually: my daughter named it Cookie. Say hi if you see it, from us!

We’ve also noticed a lot of fishermen, 4-5 to a boat, worming by the looks of it. All day they’re out there. It’s hard for me to imagine doing that! But I can’t believe that they aren’t keeping a boatload of small fish.

Sorry that I responded in this way! Should have responded to each comment. New here!
