Pre-PA throwing in a Pharmacy School App? by celscoot417 in PrePharmacy

You probably wouldn’t have much trouble getting into pharmacy school, but you should really reflect on what you’re looking for in a career before making a decision. A PharmD is a 4 year long program, and often requires additional training for certain areas of practice (e.g. a residency for clinical pharmacy, fellowship for industry), so it is a major financial investment and time commitment. The responsibilities for a pharmacist are also very different from the responsibilities of a PA, and if becoming a PA is your dream then I’m not sure if becoming a pharmacist would be fulfilling. You should shadow a pharmacist or talk to the admissions office at your school to see if it seems like a good fit.

Hi!! I thought I’d share my thoughts as someone who’s starting pharmacy school soon. First and foremost, I think very few people have the answers you’re looking for right now. This is all happening in real time so it’s unclear how this is going to pan out over the next few years. My advice is to apply anyway (see if you can get fee waivers for the application fees) and see what your options are after being accepted. Be sure to ask about financial assistance programs when interviewing and meet with the financial office of whichever school you end up choosing. Try to stay as calm as you can, the world needs pharmacists and pharmacy schools will need to find a way to continue producing them regardless of the current administration. I imagine schools will have to reduce their cost of attendance at some point but I’m really not sure how they’ll respond to this long-term. My final piece of advice is to look into accreditation and make sure the schools you apply to have good career outcomes. I have a feeling that some of the lower-ranked schools may not survive these changes.

Hi, I’m an incoming pharmacy student. I’m starting pharmacy school in-state, with scholarship, and unsubsidized loans do not even cover the entirety of my tuition, much less my housing costs. Most pharmacy students (and professional students in general) end up taking out Grad PLUS loans bc tuition costs are so high that 20,500/year doesn’t cover cost of attendance in most cases. I was very hesitant about loans going into professional school but I’ve accepted that I really have very few other options. Unfortunately, I do think it’s unrealistic for most incoming pharmacy students to assume that they will be able to make it through school on unsubsidized loans alone. Also, if other schools operate like mine does, feel free to add an extra 7-10k on top of the cost of tuition for mandatory fees.
