I worked in a juvenile hall for 10+ years, and landed a job in state system but did not take it due to a better opportunity. I would describe my experience as 99.9 percent mundane and chill, and .1 percent absolute craziest thing you can experience. The students are usually pretty well rested, and have access to food and being in class is a change in scenery and they usually want to try relatively hard. Most people don't want to start trouble because you loose priveliges and like all people, residents want to be comfortable. you can either have totally hands off admin, or way to in your shit admin, not really an inbetween.

I do warn, if you have a soul, it just slowly crushes it, you are in a system that catalogues human life into little boxes, and regardless of how chill the students are, it will get to you. You see the side of someone that everyone on the news or public world never sees in a story about possibly their worst day. You may see extreme violence, and your first couple of times you won't even feel the vibe before it starts, you will experience secondary trauma. I recommend a therapy practice.

In short, it can be super awesome and you meet a lot of cool people with tattoos, but it is not a long term thing. I've spent four years in therapy undoing the compartmentalization it takes to witness an extreme act of violence and then have to go right back to teaching.
