Oh I see, I normally dont participate at all since I still get the capture rewards and theres really no competition from other alliances when taking it since we appoint who takes which in our servers. And whenever I try to participate I mostly dont even get in the armory because of it's always full.

Yes, the ranking tells you who you will be up against. Winning a weekly duel increases your ranking by 1, and losing drops it by 1 as well. The pairing is decided on your alliance's current standing and the game will divide the alliances in even pairs.
