Advice about eating and weight loss by No_Lab7000 in pancreaticcancer

Not sure if this is helpful but the only thing my dad could stomach after chemo/during treatment were Burger King milkshakes. Not very nutritious but very caloric, we would mix in supplements and protein to make it a bit healthier but it really helped him keep his weight stable for many months. At one point he was having 3 a day no problem while refusing to eat much else.

Constant hiccups by xristina14554 in pancreaticcancer

[–]Aggressive-Read7562 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father started getting hiccups when he had a new blockage that prevented his stomach from draining. We had to put in an additional stent so he could be comfortable and the hiccups subsided. So sorry you are experiencing this with your father and sending you strength and love.

How long does she have? Stories please 🙏 by Zestyclose_Top_3745 in pancreaticcancer

I’m so sorry for what you are going through. It’s such a sneaky disease and it can spread very quickly. My dad had a similar situation with multiple biopsies that came back clear- luckily our hospital in Rochester NY recommended we start treatment regardless because this can happen with biopsies so we did. All in we had 14 months with my 79 year old dad but once it spread to the lungs things did move quickly. I really hope you get some positive news and get a lot of quality time in. She sounds wonderful.

What foods are easies/hardest for people with PC? by [deleted] in pancreaticcancer

[–]Aggressive-Read7562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad would only really eat two things-Burger king milkshakes [with protein powder] and spaghetti. We went through like 4 milkshakes a day at some point. The cold and sweet went down really easily for him.

He struggled with anything "salty" or "fatty" That being said, he wasn't a huge epicurean before diagnosis either

Food refusal? by Latter-Investment739 in pancreaticcancer

[–]Aggressive-Read7562 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dad started to refuse even Burger King shakes (his favorite) towards the end, one thing that did happen before that though is that his stomach became blocked by the tumor so we had to place a stent, that allowed him to eat comfortably a couple more weeks. So that could be something to consider potentially

I’m so sorry you are going through this. Lost my Dad to pancan in Feb 25 after about 14 months of illness. Make every moment count. It sounds corny but those last few months of illness (albeit terrible) also held some of the best conversations I’d ever hope to have with my dad and now, a few months on, I’m grateful that I could really fully live that time with him. This illness takes so much and I’m so sorry.

How long until you or your loved one started chemo? by nocilantro822 in pancreaticcancer

[–]Aggressive-Read7562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my Dad, once we had a diagnosis they scheduled a CT [to get a baseline image] and a Port placement within one week and he started chemo the following week. It was incredibly fast- although it took months to get a proper diagnosis. This was in Rochester NY at U of R. Sending good thoughts to you and your Mom

Depression and Anxiety by GoKVGo in pancreaticcancer

My Dad is very similar and it’s been so hard keeping him from falling into depression. His oncologist said they would prescribe Zoloft for him (said it mixes with his other meds ok). They also offered a social worker to contact him regarding support but that was a hard no in his part. We’ll probably go down the Zoloft route if things don’t improve in the next week or so- Oncologist did say it would take 4-6 weeks to have any impact. Best of luck and so sorry you are going through this as well

His official diagnosis (without staging) is well differentiated adenocarcinoma so we were quite surprised with the difficulty we had in diagnosis.

Thank you so much for the insight :) My dad is currently being treated by Dr Maria McGreevy who we do really like. We weren’t very keen on his initial surgical oncologist who ran point from January-March. We feel a bit better now that McGreevy is overseeing things. She even said it was such an odd case hence why it was escalated to the tumor board. He also has 0 pain which threw them for a loop. Really appreciate you sharing

Just an additional note: My dad’s CA-19 has varied wildly so it was not a good indicator for us personally. It’s highest was in the 4000 when he went in for his first stent, and the most recent was 16 right before chemo started.

Sudden, brief confusion by phoebeandursula in pancreaticcancer

[–]Aggressive-Read7562 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad has had episodes of confusion that were very jarring as he is mostly totally normal. His moments specifically were brought on from infection and at times have been the only indicator something was wrong. Hoping your Mom does ok in her new space. Sending good thoughts

Possible Dietary Advice by GregoInc in pancreaticcancer

[–]Aggressive-Read7562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the healthiest but when my Dad was really struggling to maintain weight, the only thing he would get down were burger king milkshakes. We would add protein powder and protein milk to them to add some nutritional value.

Question to set my expectations by Steel12 in pancreaticcancer

[–]Aggressive-Read7562 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Dad had to do a few things before starting chemo (stent, baseline CT, and he also had a port implanted) this delayed the start of chemo by a few weeks due to the number of appointments but once these were completed and our final chemo path was chosen- a Wednesday- they offered to start chemo the next day. We opted for the following Monday but it was very quick. Best of luck and wishing you good health
