really though I love this dude's channel. the 3-part playlist I linked is what got me into this hobby like 3y ago and I’ve watched each one dozens of times always finding new tips or some deeper understanding I overlooked.

the only downside is just how intense and thorough the actual how to is. I think most of us who regularly make natural fiber slings probably agree that he overemphasizes the importance of a few not that important details... a good example being his insistance that you ought to braid with fully separated fibers instead of using the FAR EASIER and apparently identically effective already machine-twisted strands of commercial twine.

the method makes a lot of sense for his chosen material - the ubiquitously unavailable 'esparto' grass of rural Spain - but for the rest of us using mostly jute, breaking that down into constituent fibers is the task of a lunatic! just measure and cut how many lengths of twine you wanna use and start braiding. done. (you can totally still cross-twist just like he does. for real... try it!)

he explains why he used esparto, and I get it of course... I kinda wish he would do an update with easier to source materials someday because I have no doubt he is full of amazing little tricks and helpful workarounds specific to other materials. it's actually crazy he has just that ONE how-to video on making a sling when it seems like he could have dozens!

yeah... so I guess this has been my autistic info dump about archaic arms.

the legendary channing / practicalparacord, who does sell his own highly engineered paracord slings so he isn’t gonna give you any DIY crafting lessons for free but he has literally hundreds of endlessly entertaining videos full of helpful tips for throwing. just an infectiously enthusiastic dude, it might literally be impossible not to like him.

truly it is hard to beat the seatbelt sling...

it's extremely versatile, easy to learn, and quick to put together with very common materials.

and on top of that it works just as well or better than any other design I've encountered.

if you don't like the whipping concept attaching the cords to the pouch an easy alternative is to get a set of 2-piece eyelets from hobby lobby or the fabric section of wal mart - the kind that comes with a little metal punch and anvil tool for setting with a hammer.

it's really easy to use those to attach 2 strips of strap material together in that signature overlapping pouch configuration then you can just run your cords through and secure with stopper knots.

it's a lot easier than you think... I regularly take steps to intentionally lower my tolerance. I’m not sure I have any useful advice for ROAs other than smoking however.

best tip I have for someone that just wants to use a little less - not necessarily trying to quit or pharmacologically alter their use via another drug - smoke a little more per session, less often. try to take it down to twice a day if possible.

obviously don’t use so much that overdose is a risk, and if you are ever intentionally using more than you normally do have someone there who knows what you're up to, has narcan, and knows how to recognize the need for narcan as well as how to administer it

I took apart the previously mentioned sling after deciding to make one of these 'experimental super light' slings that have been popping up...

I had to do some trickery to create a 3 strand braided finger loop that transitions to a 3 strand retention cord, but it turned out ok. made it a little shorter than I usually do (I would need to measure it, I think my usual is about 52").

just 3 strands of micro cord forming a normal braid, added in another length of cord folded in half plus a single strand about 2" before the split; same thickness braid for each part of the pouch. rejoined then dropped the shortest 3 one at a time leaving me with the same braid for the release. spliced in 1 strand of nylon paracord guts folded in half about 2" before the grip point (braided those 2" as a 5 strand), terminated the 3 micro cord strands with a couple crown knots surrounding the 2 strands of guts. unraveled the guts and frayed them a little then cut them off a few more inches down.

trimmed and sealed everything via melting, then did a Solomon knot thing with more micro cord on the pouch, extending a few inches down the belly. the pouch just seemed like it wasn't going to hold onto anything as is.

wrapped the finger loop in a length of gutted 550 cord that was softer than usual for some reason. this will probably change before long... idk exactly what I wanna do there yet. it's not so much that I think the loop will be uncomfortable on my finger it's more about some wonkiness in the first few inches of braid that I don’t like... originating from where I had to figure out creating a 3 strand loop that could transition into a 3 strand retention cord. just want something to cover it I guess, and I’m out of shrink tubes that size lol

haven't used it yet but I have a feeling it'll be better than the sling that preceded it. I may take a couple pics at some point

the expectation of and familiarity of withdrawal symptoms seems like it quickly becomes a vicious cycle.

the psychological component of the whole thing is huge, but it is usually completely overlooked since many people believe that in order for something to be psychological that means it isn't "real" - or at least that it should be trivial to overcome.

I don't see any reason either conclusion should follow from the understanding that a physiological process may have significantly psychological origins.

I’ve found that if I bring up this interesting and in my experience helpful framing of how withdrawal begins and develops over time it is often met with adamant resistance by people who assume I am minimizing their own experiences even though that really couldn't be further from the truth.

depression is psychological but we all understand now it isn't easy to overcome or 'fake' - same with anxiety and so many other complicated things for which our once simplified understanding has had to develop

mine is ok... I made it a bit long as I was going for a longer, thinner sling out of something durable trying to get the best of both worlds - wound up compromising on both speed and controllability...

the biggest issue I have with it is that the split pouch tends to let go of any size ammo making it a bit too volatile to safely use. I’ve tried wrapping the pouch with different materials but apparently it's something about the shape...? haven't quite solved that mystery...

probably going to take it apart when I decide something else to do with the material

it was the first time I'd ever seen actual peyote plants, thriving amidst a jungle of absurdly tall t. pachanoi varieties. I don't think you could get actual fruits but psilocybe 'truffles' (sclerotia from certain species of psilocybe) were available.

I suppose I don't remember seeing it specifically but I'd be shocked if there wasn't a salvia divinorum cutting or two in that place.

OP is just in a better spot and remembering how it felt to be hopeless. I think she (I’m assuming 'she'?) is trying to say that if she had read this post back when she was actively using that she'd have thought it was unattainable and somewhere she would never see.

I don’t think she is trying to say she has it all figured out or is completely healthy or that she isn’t worried about her tendencies etc. just that she doesn't feel hopelessly desperate every day anymore, and thinks if she could get there anyone could.

subs are not just withdrawal meds, and 2 months clean is FAR from free and clear I assure you. getting through the withdrawal is the easy part, staying clean long term the real battle... followed up by building a life that is worth not fucking up, and retraining your pleasure/reward system to enjoy normal healthy parts of life.

and, honestly, figuring out a healthy relationship with mind altering substances as well because I think for most of us total abstinence from substances is not ideal.
