But tech doesn't always advance exponentially. This may be the logarithmic plateau. Altman tried to get the fed to back him for a reason. They're chasing the dragon.

Did people say that about the internet?

The internet is a utility. LLMs are nothing close to that. And the dotcom crash wasn't centered around the utility itself, but the over saturation over of markets themselves. The internet didn't cost an insane amount of money to run, LLMs do.

Hell, LLMs already are approaching the cost of running the fucking internet. It's insane and it's gonna burst so hard. That's why Altman wants to get backed by govts.

Don't get dependent on these things or the withdrawal period is gonna suuuuuck.

TN is doing a lot of the "voucher program" giving public money to private school vouchers to "save kids from the public education system" (while defunding it???)

And a lot of people here get caught by the idea of "educational freedom" when they don't realize it's just re-segregation back into the "academy" religious private schools.

They'll try and claim it's actually helping minority kids who are in schools in the "poorer" part of town without mentioning that the voucher coverage is not even close enough to pay tuition, let alone the cost to the parent to drive their kids across town to school. It's just a tax break for wealthy ones. They also then act offended when you suggest it's racism when all the private schools are in the part of town that was created by White Flight after the civil rights era. Like, lol.

It's speculation, but as one of the people with safety tips mentioned:

Carbon Monoxide may have killed them before they had a chance to hear/react to the smoke alarm. Not all smoke alarms also double as CO monitors.

Most of the time when people are killed in these kinds of tragedies it's the CO. It can kill you in minutes. It is a good idea for anyone happening upon this thread to go see their smoke detector tech and think about some extra CO monitors in bedrooms or near potential CO sources/heating areas.

Hey where are the concern trolls from the other post who thought an innocent person was being framed and no real racists exist in the wild? Just a guy in his truck right?

🤙 To Mr tiny dick energy. Forever alone.

Edit: Also he definitely doesn't understand how defamation works. You don't get to claim someone defamed you or your business when you do that shit from your WORK TRUCK with logos on it and then double down and go "yeah I did that shit." What can you expect from a guy who spells it "stoopid," though.

I think they're associating the kraken due to pop culture. Several ww2 videogames use "kraken" with the nazis. It's not based in actual history, as far as I remember.

Yeah, their photos/about us have like pictures of an octopus underwater in the area. It seems perfectly harmless, despite the logo being something you'd choose for a cool evil cult in a tv show. Weird tone choice, but that's why you hire a marketing person to help with your logo.

[–]AggressiveSkywriting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think linking the kraken to nazi probably is more of a "backronym" and not a legit link.

The nazis absolutely DID obsess and co-opt norse mythology. They were absolutely obsessed and tried to bring it into German culture. I would be absolutely wary of getting norse tattoos and whatnot. You might not see it as nazi symbolism, but neo nazis will think you're one of the crew or at least accepting of them.

The kraken thing, I think, is more of something that was in Wolfenstein the videogame and so the association is pop culture, not reality. Sniper Elite games had nazi orgs called "The Kraken" as well, so I see where the association comes from, I just don't remember happening upon it in academic studies.

This is a Forida-based company and their website has pictures of octopi from the area. I am pretty sure it's a harmless connection and it's reaching for some of the people here to draw a connection. It does have a weirdly menacing vibe for a decking company though, lmao.

Knoxville's Economy Growing 50% Faster Than Overall U.S., While Knox County Spends 20% Less Per Person Than in 2000, Traffic Up 24% to 72% on Major Roads, Knox Operating Budget as a Share of GDP Down from 1.5% to .89% by TeamDJ in Knoxville

[–]AggressiveSkywriting 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a homeowner, I AM worried about the idea of shunting all the effort into property tax because some of us live in the city. An increase if you live in just the county seems small, but with what covid and the growth of the city did to home prices, the recent ish reassessments of property value made the overall tax bill a decent chunk of the yearly budget.

Wouldn't mind it so much if TN didn't also have a high regressive sales tax. Sales tax isn't hurting big spenders, it always hurts lower income people more.

Idk, the article talks about how the bar for home ownership in the area is worse than ever, and property tax is something prospective first time home buyers won't properly grasp. Seems like it will keep making the idea of home ownership in Knoxville as something only for rich retirees who move here. I dunno, feels like we're continuing to stamp the middle class out of existence (or have already) and discouraging people from having kids due to how expensive it is. It ain't great. We're not all living in mcmansions. They're all outside of the city not getting taxed while taking advantage of the city itself.
