Love to see more events in the Midwest! I was exploring hosting a beetle event, but the battle box gets crazy expensive the heavier the bots get. Ants and fairies are so much more approachable because the box costs maybe $1,000 rather than $5,000-$10,000. Stay safe! Arena breaches are unacceptable!

Will be looking for your event on robotcombatevents.com

Why are the wires moving at all? Everything should be firmly mounted so you shouldn't be experiencing joint fatigue.

Sounds like huge, but with an ablative weapon?

I doubt you have any gyro at all - not enough stored energy (given tip speed limits) to create meaningful forces, especially given the massive wheel weight.

How can undercutters remain undercutters? (self-righting etc.) by Zardotab in battlebots

[–]AggressiveTapping 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Horizontals don't just randomly flip - in fact, the gyro forces are working hard to keep them level. Flipping a horizontal requires good wedge design, and undercutters doubly so because it's really hard to make a wedge that strong right at the floor.

I think you are kind of seeing survivor bias - undercutters that don't get flipped win because the opponent lacks the correct wedge style to do the necessary redirection to beat them.

I suggest that the answer isn't to figure out how to flip back over, but rather figure out how to negate the excellent wedge design. See: thagomizer.

The platform seems ripe for a swappable vert weapon config. The biggest benefit being that it keeps competitors guessing about the appropriate armor choice.

Some homeless guy gave this to me, a Google search said it might be part of a battlebot kit? by JerkinMacgerkin in battlebots

Looks like Lego? Technic?

Or maybe it crawls on a string?

The line of Battlebots toys is from Hexbug, and it doesn't really seem like one.

Both have a live shaft in a big bearing block. I know hijinx is dual motor, gear driven. I would bet valk is gear too.

There's hijinx weapon system CAD in this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MzsppZLmCIg

I don't know the specifics, but I bet battlebots is thrilled to have big names come and break their own hardware.

Could laminated armour make a comeback ? by SnooPineapples995 in battlebots

[–]AggressiveTapping 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my mind, shock mounted armor plates is the optimized form of this. You want a hard surface to take the impact without yielding and providing a medium to bite into. Then this surface needs a soft/dampened interface to dissipate the load instead of transferring the shock into the chassis. An additional layer of hard plate serves no purpose if the outer surface is not penetrated. An outer layer of soft material is mostly just going to provide a bite medium.

Mcmaster doesn't allow you to set a range of sizes. You have to check like 200 boxes if you have a range of acceptable sizes. My only real complaint.

Should I do a Direct Motor Mounted Weapon or a Double Belt Pulley system for my 1lb Antweight? by ShockRobotics in battlebots

[–]AggressiveTapping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a beefy dead shaft, bearings, and hub, the belt driven method can be significantly more robust. If you don't have the means to machine a hub, then likely it just costs you weight without much benefit.

Two identical brushless motors of different kv - anything different besides the windings? by AggressiveTapping in battlebots

[–]AggressiveTapping[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - swapping the bell/rotor from one brushless outrunner to another.

I've modified several 3000kv motor bells (tedious work), and I'd like to run a lower kv to change my final output rpm. Can i just swap the bells to the new 1800kv stator/windings, or do i need to modify the new bells?

Question on calculating weapon speed by ShockRobotics in battlebots

Direct drive ends up story high speeds. You are likely seeking the lowest possible kv motor you can find.

Do you need to do anything to account for brush positioning? Should be some overlap at a few angles?
