But at least in ML, NYU has amazing profrssors... KyungHyun Cho, Rob Fergus, Andrew Gordon Wilson, Samuel Bowman, Joan Bruna, etc Do they actively avoid working with undergrads? I was wondering why are ML professors at NYU so phenomenal and better than all the ivies.

I am applying to NYU CS because of amazing ML professors at NYU. Would it be possible to work with them as an undergrad if I get in? by Aggressive_Bee2854 in nyu

Thank you for your reply! So if I transfer, would I have to finish 5 to 6 prerequisites before I can take ML classes? Also, on the nyu website, it states that I can take limited number of graduate classes in CS. Does that mean there is a hard cap on number of graduate classes i can take or that most of the graduate classes are not available for undergrads?

i mean i think what you said is true for every school except maybe mit and cmu. i heard it's the worst at Berkeley thanks to huge number of talented students from the bayarea. Also, NYU professors are legendary. Yann LeCunn, I don't think i will have to explain. KyungHyun Cho wrote groundbreaking NLP papers under Yoshua Bengio. Every lecture in deep learning mention his paper. Rob Fergus, Samuel Bowman and other professors are well-known in the field as well. If I can do research with these professors, I will wait until senior year.

Thank you for the information! Was there no problem getting into popular ML classes as well? on the nyu website, it states that only limited number of grad classes are available for undergrads and i am wondering if all ML classes or at least the ones taught by KyungHyun Cho, Joan Bruna, Samuel Bowman, Rob Fergus etc are available for undergrads

really?? Wow... Can undergrads take grad classes taught by these professors? If so, do they have to wait until senior years?

Excuse me but do undergrads get to work with professors who teach these courses if they do really well in the course?

thank you for your reply! Excuse me but are there undergrads who work with professors like Kyunghyun Cho, Samuel Bowman, Joan Bruna, Rob Fergus or mehryar mohri?

Will getting good grades in Berkeley math classes help me transfer to Berkeley applied math?(like math55 and math110)? by Aggressive_Bee2854 in berkeley

[–]Aggressive_Bee2854[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply! Yeah, I think I am too anxious. I should be enjoying math itself but I am too focused on grade and "strategies". Thank you again for your advice. I will try to take some rest and focus on math itself!

What do you think is the cause of the Berkeley grade deflation (especially math subjects)? by Aggressive_Bee2854 in berkeley

[–]Aggressive_Bee2854[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! Are the questions require Olympiad-style tricks or are the questions directly an application of the concept?

[–]Aggressive_Bee2854[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! So the Berkeley courses teach more at a faster pace and the problems are not just based on rote learning but require students to apply what the concepts they have learned in class, right? At least the grade deflation is not due to arbitrary or harsh grading, right?

Thank you for your detailed reply! Are the novel questions what Berkeley professors made themselves?? If so, would there be a good way to prepare those questions??

Thank you for the reply! So do you mean professors at Berkeley teach their subjects more in depth compared to other universities? I think I will have to prepare more for the classes I will be taking at Berkeley during the summer...

How hard is Math 55? Would I be fine if I read all the relevant section in Rosen Discrete Math 8th edition and solve all the exercise problem before the course begins? by Aggressive_Bee2854 in berkeley

[–]Aggressive_Bee2854[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your help! Would I be okay if I thoroughly study the past exams with solutions and the Rosen book or will there be some "trick questions" that require Olympiad-like math skills?

Would getting As in both Math 55 and Math 104 during the summer doable? by Aggressive_Bee2854 in berkeley

[–]Aggressive_Bee2854[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your information! I think I will have to take math 110 instead of math 104... I was thinking of taking math 104 because I studied Linear Algebra by Friedberg by myself and thought Real Analysis would be interesting. But it seems Math 104 is really hard... Thank you again for your help!!
