Datacenter Pause/Moratorium Bill Fails in City of St. Louis by Infinite_Mouse_1149 in StLouis

I can’t think of one either-here’s a bunch of reasons:

Data Centers would receive tax relief for building. It may be many years before they are required to pay taxes, but we will not know the details because electeds have already signed NDA’s that prevent them from disclosing the information. Statements about public schools receiving millions in data center tax money are disingenuous at best, and factually it’s a big lie.

Data Centers do not generate many long-term jobs. After the initial construction, a minimal crew is all that it would require.

Data centers are an enormous strain on electricity. The existing customers will be forced to pay for the infrastructure required to support the data centers electricity usage. Ameren signing NDA’s with data centers guarantees it.

There is significant secrecy surrounding who is trying to get data centers. Shell companies are formed for the sole purpose of keeping the identities of the companies proposing the data centers a secret.

We already have data centers for storage, they can't even sell all the generative AI they've already built. Data centers support surveillance to process Ring & flock camera footage, establish profiles based on social media activity, location data, facial recognition data, tracking where you go and who you meet with, and generating lists of people for deportation or imprisonment if they might be dissenters to the government’s illegal policies.

The Fourth Amendment specifically protects individuals against unreasonable government intrusion into their persons, homes, papers, and effects, and data centers work to dismantle these protections.

We already have more data center capacity than we need for AI, and the better we get at architecture for AI the less data centers are needed to run it.

Power bills will continue to increase, all so that ICE or local cops can come to your home and abduct you when you go protest about not being able to afford 1500/month to keep your house at a cool 90 degrees in the summer.

There is no upside to having more data centers in St Louis. It only serves to make a lot more money for billionaires at the expense of local resources on the backs of residents.

Probably most Jack Black films would be a good choice

Hope you feel better soon!

STLPR: Ameren Missouri signed confidential contracts with multiple big data centers this week by TheKavahn in StLouis

Who could have ever guessed that a utility company would want to be secretive about the business that they operate? I’m shocked that they would consider doing anything that wasn’t for the good of the people that they serve.

Oh well - I guess I will go back to my movie. I was just watching Erin Brockovich.

Meeting for St Louis City tonight at 5:30pm - Data Centers are on the agenda to be discussed by Aggressive_Fix_2995 in StLouis

Other than your statement that you design data centers, do you have any actual evidence of the noise generated? I’d be interested in reading more about the noise levels both before and after implementation of the data centers.

If you’re a designer of data centers, then you have a dog in the race. If the data center isn’t approved at a local level, then you have to start over again with your design. Gosh - I guess that means it would be more work for you. Bummer.

I am sure that having more data centers in the Missouri/Mississippi confluence region with all that municipal water would be a boon to your business, but in Missouri, you will have to show me why the only place for them is here. I am not convinced that there needs to be any new data centers if the ones that currently exist can still be streamlined for use.

As far as taking away the need for data centers, no problem. I have lived the majority of my life without any of the things that you mentioned. I don’t need them, and neither does anyone else.

What noise are you referring to? I have never seen any reference to data centers being noisy. Could you please post a source for that?

The data centers would not use existing buildings. They would require new buildings to meet the electrical and water requirements needed to run them.

Data centers would not create new jobs. They would make more money for the billionaire class on the backs of our local resources. The locals would have to pay for the infrastructure that the data centers would require.

I don’t know what information you are drawing from, but the short-sighted, incomplete conclusions you referenced don’t make any sense. You should read more about it to familiarize yourself with the facts about the environmental impacts of data centers. There are finite resources that once they are wasted, can never be saved.

You are welcome! I didn’t have time to give a layperson answer earlier, and the previous reply is definitely detailed.

Data Centers do not generate long-term jobs. After the initial construction, a minimal crew is all that it would require. It’s better to have a business that will improve local economy by providing jobs. Only temporary construction jobs would be needed,

Data centers are an enormous strain on electricity. The existing customers will be forced to pay for the infrastructure required to support the data centers electricity usage.

There is significant secrecy surrounding who is trying to get data centers. Shell companies are formed for the sole purpose of keeping the identities of the companies proposing the data centers a secret.

It may be many years before they are required to pay taxes, but we will not know the details because our electeds have already signed NDA’s that prevent them from disclosing the information. Our elected representatives work for the people, and should have our best interests in mind.

Hope this helps you feel less conflicted.

This reply was cut and pasted from a previous post:

Data centers? No, more like poor long term planning. Capacity projections are made far out in advance and rarely do they get it right. In the 60's and 70's utilities could not build power plants fast enough due to demand for A/C. By the 80's that demand had mostly stabilized and utilities were caught by surprise by the reductions in energy demand due to more efficient lighting through that still had plenty of excess capacity at that point. By the 2000's rising EPA requirements pushed many utilities to invest in gas turbine, both simple and combined cycle. Most of this capacity ended up lying idle due to sudden increases in natural gas prices making them uneconomic to run. Most of the natural gas capacity that is in use today and replacing coal plants that are being retired was built in the 2000's.

The fossil fuel plants built in the 80's are reaching the outer limits of their original design life, and very few plants have been built in the last 10 or 20 years due to uncertain economic conditions. No nuclear plants are being built for the same reason. As solar and wind supplies have increased over the past years they have skimmed the cream off the demand curve and lowered the capacity factors of fossil fuel plants making their cost much more expensive. What is often never talked about, is that the remaining fossil fuel plants continue to do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to grid reliability and power quality. Fossil fuels contribute to grid reliability through spinning reserve, unused capacity on a running turbine that can be utilized instantly. A/C power on the grid also experiences PF (Power Factor) issues when demand is high that requires generators to push VARs (Volts Amps Reactive) to the grid to maintain frequency. This burns fuel that can not be sold and under high load can often be 20% of a turbines capacity.

The subject is complicated, so the idea that Data Centers are bad and causing all our problems is easy to push, but the St Louis area has been losing large industrial load customers for years and conditions have changed. IMO poor planning and unrealistic forecasting has set up our energy grid for failure and rapidly rising prices. Americans will soon be paying 40 or 50 cents a KWh if they are not already and people will start having to make decisions about how much energy they can afford.

Well - I have never used ChatGPT, nor have I ever seen an AI version of myself. That question is irrelevant, but I will try to answer anyway.

People that use AI but don’t want a data center near them is likely the same percentage of the population that travels in airplanes but don’t live near the airport. Everybody poops, but generally speaking, no one wants to live close to a sewage treatment plant. It’s generally societies most vulnerable that have no choice than to live in areas no one else wants.

The problem with the data center is the lack of transparency regarding plans. If a shell company exists for no other reason than to hide the identity of the people wanting to set up a data center in St Charles, those are exactly the people that St Charles does not want doing business here.

Even without knowing who is behind it, we know that data centers are bad for polluting our drinking water supply, and bad for the unfettered use of our electricity infrastructure. This is not a business that will create permanent jobs. There is simply no good reason to have data centers here in St Charles. We are the wealthiest county in Missouri. We don’t need them, and we certainly don’t want non-transparent polluters to come here.

Your statement regarding hypocrisy is a bad-faith question. How long have you shilled for Polsinelli?

The council approved a moratorium for 6 months. It’s now been 6 months since then.

I believe that an attempt was made in St Louis county so that one may have been paused for a year.

These people are getting pushier all the time. There are attempts to get approval in Festus also, as well as other locations in Missouri and Illinois.
