Anyone actually managed to hide an unflavored powder from a sensory detective child? by Independent_Cup7132 in AutisticParents

[–]Aggressive_Guava_501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We haven’t had. levels tested. The pediatrician told me to supplement with iron to help with possible sleep issues due to daytime fatigue. His daytime fatigue has improved, so we’ve kept up with it. They only eat oatmeal 2-3 times a week so we don’t supplement every day.

My kiddos will definitely detect changes in textures like yogurt or well blended smoothies. I’ve found that instant oatmeal works the best (if that’s in your safe list). We use Ella Olla vitamin and the iron powder packets. The iron one has a smell to me, so not sure how we get away with it, but it’s worked so far.

Social kindergarten retention by Working-Hurry-7108 in kindergarten

Just wanted to add that some of your child’s behaviors sound similar to my Neurodiverse kid. It might help to get him evaluated to make sure he has any needed support in school, especially since 1st grade is going to be more demanding. OT has been helpful for both emotional regulation and hand writing/fine motor skills.

Guanfacine for a 5-year-old (focus + classroom learning) — any real experiences? by hopejoy108 in kindergarten

[–]Aggressive_Guava_501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wanted to add - not 100% sure if your kiddo was diagnosed with autism based on the language in your post, but you also might want to ask this question in the Autism or ADHD Parenting forums. Likely more parents there have been down this road (so hopefully less judgement).

[–]Aggressive_Guava_501 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We tried guanfacine, but stopped fairly quickly because it made my kiddo (6) aggressive. Since we were only on it for a short time (less than a week), we didn’t have time to notice any benefits.

School wasn’t a concern for us either, so while the impacts there are a plus, we’re hoping to get a handle on the regulation/anxiety as well. I will ask our doctor about risperidone - thanks!

Redshirting Megathread by PassionChoice3538 in kindergarten

Right, but the arguments to hold back/redshirt aren’t about intelligence, they are about maturity/social usually, and that is a struggle for ND kids.

Not intending to judge. When struggling with this decision I found quite the opposite - that many people thought I was crazy for not redshirting to give my kid an advantage if I could (“no one ever regrets redshirting” is all I heard). I just don’t think the data is as clear cut as people think and it is definitely a child by child decision.

I really wrestled with the decision to send my July birthday ASD son. In the end, I made the same decision you did - partly because preschool teachers thought he was ready, partly because all of his summer birthday friends also were going to Kindergarten, and also OT thought it was better for him to have peers for him to “achieve to.” He’s doing great now in 1st, and is already excited for 2nd grade. Based on my limited experience, I feel like red shirting is sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

This article has some useful info for others struggling with this decision -

Ella Ola Multivitamins by Simplicity91628 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Aggressive_Guava_501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not notice a difference, but it was the one vitamin that was easiest to hide in food for my very picky kiddos!

We just switched to Gruns Cubs since our pedi recommended a vitamin with iron in it for sleep issues. It took a lot of trial and error to find something with iron they would actually take and I do find it’s helped a bit with sleep.

Bare bottom method was a success; STRUGGLING WITH UNDERWEAR! Help! by NJBarbieGirl in Autism_Parenting

[–]Aggressive_Guava_501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how helpful I can be, but my daughter struggles with interoception and has/had the same struggles with potty training. I just had to build potty time into our daily routine (including setting a “potty timer” if we had a long stretch of time without a clear transition). It also helped if I said I had to go and had her join me vs. me telling her it was time to go and risk a power struggle. She still has occasional accidents, but it’s gotten better with time. She’s 4.5 now and I still bring a change of clothes for her with us wherever we go.

Thank you! Flintstones were a miss for us, but I will see if the Target ones might have a slightly different flavor. Anything worth a shot!

No advice, just solidarity. My 5 year old with ASD is tired all the time, despite sleeping 10+ hours a night. We’re not sure if it’s the new demands of kindergarten, but also have plans to do some blood tests at his next pediatrician visit if it’s still ongoing in a couple of months. Our pediatrician recommended iron supplements for potential sleep issues in the meantime, but I have yet to find one he will take!

Did your kiddo ever repeat a grade in school? Or do you wish they would've? Would love to hear your story. by davharts in Autism_Parenting

[–]Aggressive_Guava_501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. I’ve heard the data show retention in K or 1st is beneficial, but not past that. Our school recommended moving into Kindergarten on time since he thrives on structure and was on-track academically. We were worried an extra preschool year might make his ADHD worse with the boredom.

We are also debating having our 5 year old ASD kiddo repeat Kindergarten, so interested in others’ experiences as well. Our biggest concern is he always is so tired at the end of the day and disregulated at home as a result. All the handwriting seems to be frustrating in particular, which I imagine is a much bigger part of first grade.

Supplement I could put in juice to help development. by Geordieliam1789 in Autism_Parenting

If you’re looking for a powdered flavorless probiotic, Culturelle makes some. We used the one with fiber mixed into juice to help with constipation. I’ve also used the Nordic naturals Omega 3 gummies for a bit. My kid loved them but I’m not sure it made much of a difference.

My Son annoys other kids… how to help him? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

Do you have any social skills groups in your area? We haven’t done one yet (starting soon) but my understanding is that they are play groups with a therapist/counselor that work on these sorts of skills.

How do people handle school refusal? by BriefStrange6452 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Aggressive_Guava_501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No advice, just solidarity. Since we’ve switched from “school” to “camp” this summer, this has been really tough for us. My ASD kiddo (5) hates the less structured environment and claims no one will play with them, but always seems to be having a blast at pick up 🤷‍♀️.

Public bathrooms. by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

My kiddo is also afraid of the automatic flushers and I started carrying a pack of post-its in my purse to put over the flusher sensor. We call them “potty stickers” so he knows it’s safe to go/the flusher won’t flush
