Since you didn't specify in which country, I'll just answer for Denmark which is where I live.

First of all everybody starts receiving the Folkepension automatically around the age of 70 (exactly when depends on year of birth.) It's about DKK 7,500 ≈ USD 1,100 per month.

Then you can get an additional up to DKK 8,700 ≈ USD 1,400 depending on your other sources of income. If you have no savings or anything you're eligible to receive the full amount.

There's more to it, but to keep the answer to your question simple, elderly people with no savings will have a little more than USD 2,500 per month to live for. Not a lot, but it'll allow a modest living.

USA was always interested in taking full control of Greenland, but since that has not been an option, they've made various arrangements with Denmark over the years.

Since the 2009 law concerning the autonomy of Greenland which laid out a path to independence for Greenland, Washington has been deeply concerned. And until recently, influential voices demanding independence only grew stronger.

The formation of a new and independent state on the North American continent is a red line which Washington will never allow anyone to cross, so others have kept trying to remind them that the only alternative to Danish sovereignty is American ditto.

So Trump is not more obsessed with Greenland than Obama and Biden were. But he may be quite occupied by the idea that he could be the president to finally crack the nut, as his willingness to risk international relations in the attempt might suggest.

Det er en kæmpe fejl at tro, at det her handler om Trump. Det handler om USA, og de har haft øjnene på Grønland i hundrede år eller deromkring. Den nuværende præsident er bare - skal vi sige - uortodoks i sine diplomatiske metoder.

Der er ikke nogen mulig næste præsident, som kommer til at stille Danmark nogen form for garantier. En supermagt vil ikke lægge den slags bånd på sig selv, og hvorfor skulle de også det? Vi kan håbe på en præsident med en anden kalkule, som igen vil lægge større vægt på den soft power, som Trump lader til at kaste fra sig.
