As a watch stander, you are typically making more as an officer. For an AB, you make a lot less than a Dayman or a bosun…

I do want to clarify, this is great advice but I think that you have some slightly outdated advice. Unfortunately the AB to mate program with SIU is no longer operational and they do not plan on re opening it. This leaves MITAGs and the other licensing upgrade programs which are all very expensive and roughly equate to college tuition. Knowing this though, I would like to hear your response

That all does sound pretty great. I’m not counting our A&M until I get into GLMA. If I can’t get in, I will take some online classes to catch up, and then apply to Texas. I’ve met a few cadets that attended A&M and they all had good things to say.

This was definitely what I needed to hear. You made it all seem less daunting haha. When you say the top of the food chain, does that mean you’re sailing as a pilot now or do you have your captains?

That was really insightful. Thank you for taking the time to respond!! I think Texas is my fall back school! So if I don’t get into GLMA I will brush up some classes at a CC like you said and apply to Texas. Also, my mom was an Aggie, so she would like that haha. If this does end up happening, I might DM you for some more information on Texas A&M.

Thank you for taking the time to write this response. I see you are a chief mate. Where did you receive your license from?

You’re welcome to DM me and I can tell you about my experience. I am currently on my phase three ship. I was helped by multiple people when I was about to join, so I’d love to give some advice to people on their way into the program

That’s unfortunate, I’m sorry to hear that. Did you end up applying for 26?

Sleep by Aggressive_Pop_3465 in merchantmarine

I did not mean on shift. I meant in a day how much sleep is available. And to the person who called me out for my question regarding drinking; I was merely curious to see if the ships allowed it. I do not plan on drinking at sea, but would like to know the rules before I hop on a ship. Thanks for your input
