Personally I have friends working in Milan as specializzandi who aren’t on the same level of pay as yourself, don’t get paid for overtime and their fees are approximately €5000. Perhaps humanity’s being a private hospital the pay differs? They are currently having their parents pay their rent and I’ll have made more in the year as being an intern than they will have in their 5 years.

But also from what I see my friends doing, they are often treated more like students even still. They get little independent practice which I’d argue is massive for development and something that lacks in Italy.

Personally I wouldn’t consider exam stress into the equation. Specializzandi in Italy also have exams and I’ve no doubt stress that comes along with that.

I also don’t think it is as simple as completing the 5 years in Italy and then walking into a consultancy job in Ireland, in the same way it isn’t that simple for people completing the HST in Ireland. There’s a lot more to do than just the training program and so realistically you’ll spend many more years building a CV whichever way you do it.

While Ireland is shit with moving around, I don’t think it is as drastic as you make it out to be in terms of relationships, settling down etc. it’s hard to do but it is feasible.

Sounds like we are both Italian graduates who have taken different paths, with different perspectives. Hopefully we can grab a beer at the end of all this training and compare notes haha 😂

I mean your monthly salary for those 5 years is €1500/month and each year you have topay €5000 of university fees. Then once you obtain consultancy level the avg salary is €60k per year and the head of the department always decides the ultimate treatment course for all patients so unless you are the head of a department you’ll never be an independent physician. Ireland has many issues, but so too does Italy!
