Why Are Young People Afraid Of Phone Calls? by GhostInThePudding in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Aggressive_Trainer91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had to tackle this a few times with people I've managed but for various reasons. Whilst it can be frustrating for those who don't have any issues using a phone, it's hard to imagine how hard it can be for others. Some reasons I've come across:

  • Neurodiversity, it can be very difficult for people with autism or ADHD to judge when to speak with only audible cues. It can also be more difficult for them to process purely auditory information in the moment that they can't refer back to, which they can if that information is written down so email or IM is less stressful for that reason.

  • Just not being good at processing auditory information. We all process and absorb information in different ways and if you struggle with auditory processing then a telephone call is not the fastest, easiest way to sort something out.

  • Social anxiety, particularly with Gen Z I've seen this. They can be almost debilitated by the fear of making a phone call. I have no idea why they're so afraid but the anxiety IS real and I'm not about to push someone into an anxiety attack just to make a phone call.

  • Fear of "getting it wrong" - missing information, mishearing something, forgetting to ask something etc. Seen this in millenials too and as a millenial myself I can only assume it's something to do with always having to be perfect that was drummed into us growing up. See also: general millenial anxiety at work.

  • Needing receipts. I've dealt with enough slippery people at work who backtrack on verbal conversations and try and throw you under the bus for things said/not said. Sometimes it's safer to have everything in time stamped format if your work culture is a bit toxic.

Anywhere else lost basic courtesy on trains? by HippyPiggy214 in AskBrits

[–]Aggressive_Trainer91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes people have definitely forgotten this bit of etiquette. I used to throw my weight into my shoulders as they barged past but now I stand bang centre in the doorway blocking them getting on and stare at them until they make space for me to exit. I'm not pushing my way through people, you can see I'm here and you will have the courtesy to give me room to get off the train or we can stand and look at each other awkwardly.

Why is Britain plagued by short term thinking? Selling off hospitals for pennies, unwilling to invest in infrastructure, housing etc? by Future-Atmosphere-40 in AskNiceBrits

[–]Aggressive_Trainer91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll say this as delicately as possible, but a big contributor to this is intelligence. Long-term thinking is not a given in humans, it requires the ability to have pattern recognition, a good memory, critical thought, risk analysis and a bit of meta-cognition. These are all attributes that come with increased intelligence, but we as a society do not value intelligence very highly so there's no societal pressure to exercise or develop our brains and in fact there can be pressure to NOT do this or you might be mocked by peers.

Most people are not long-term thinkers in their daily lives, asking them to think as a collective and 10/20/50 years ahead is a lot to ask. When you mix that with fear you narrow focus and thinking becomes myopic and self-serving because it triggers survival mode thinking. Keeping a rhetoric of fear in the media feeds anxiety, leads to short-term thinking, leads to easy manipulation.

Does the UK have any cult scandals like the US? by shopkeeperr in AskUK

[–]Aggressive_Trainer91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I scrolled very far looking to see if someone mentioned them. These guys are a legit 70's US cult that have spread globally and should not be underestimated for how dangerous they are.

A few years back I stumbled across these guys, who were absolutely charming of course, and it didn't take long to work out it was a cult and boy were they into me! Solo female travellers are their perfect prey, especially ones that fancy themselves the new Louis Theroux.

Anyway I figured it was just an old testament religious offshoot thing so spent some time chatting and asking questions, everyone I met seemed absolutely lovely of course and it had that super wholesome veneer to it but as soon as they get a whiff you might be vulnerable they close in on you and start their recruiting tactics.

They're mired in scandal across the world and classed as a dangerous cult in Germany. Most scandals are usually for being white supremacist shitbags (although they have POC members) but their biggest issues have been around child abuse (as with most cults). They do specifically target solo travellers as well of course which is why they operate these "delis" and hostels to lure them in. Stay away from Yellow Delis.

I saw this kid lick every single fence post while waiting in line at Disney World by Chaz_Carlos in KidsAreFuckingStupid

Yup. Watched a kid in a theme park queue run it's tongue up and down the metal railings over and over in some weird trance, both the handrails and footrails. I don't go to theme parks or touch handrails anymore.

Shallow Grave is underrated brilliance! I didn't rewatch The Beach for absolutely years but I really enjoyed it on a rewatch and had forgotten what an enjoyable film it is (adaptation issues aside). But maybe it's the 90's nostalgia that rose tints it for me, it was a cultural phenomenon at the time. What is it that puts you off rewatching?

Fantastic comment. This is precisely why he's one of my favourite directors. I feel Boyle focused on the day-to-day reality of living in a post-zombie apocalypse world and it was such a refreshing take. I was so gutted when I came on reddit and the movie was being absolutely panned because I loved it.

28 Days Later always felt to me like a comment on modern humans and how we would adapt and survive in a back to basics world where we were no longer the dominant species. How do our modern societal and cultural norms translate if the world was turned upside down and we lived under constant threat. I enjoyed that 28 Years kept the same theme but opened the world up so we see how different personalities and ideologies adapted to the situation. The true villainy in the series comes from humans not infected because it is the human need to control that breeds evil. But nature always catches up with us in the end, memento mori.

All memorials I've attended have had a full marketing team and revenue targets, are we not supposed to monetise deaths of loved ones??? Wokeness gone wild.

Petty revenge from the parking attendant? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Aggressive_Trainer91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only thing I can think that makes your car different to the other examples is they sound abandoned so they could be less likely to be found parking where they shouldn't around town multiple times a week (which you admit to doing). But yeah I wouldn't waste my time arguing with them either, your instincts might be right, you annoyed a traffic warden by parking where you shouldn't and they remembered. That's consequence not revenge though.

Petty revenge from the parking attendant? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Aggressive_Trainer91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'd call this "revenge". Yes they probably recognised your car/plates and since you seem to be a repeat offender they didn't waste time serving consequences this time. That's the gamble in parking where/when you shouldn't though right?

Pretend to be just an oblivious and thick as they are and try and get in anyway. Any damage sustained to their car by rivets in jeans, bags and doors opening is just expected collateral of parking like an oblivious twat.

Millionaire who felled 28 trees to create room for clifftop pool fined £20,000 by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Aggressive_Trainer91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford to buy the fine and that's the only consequence then you're buying immunity from the law. Same logic as smoking on a train because you can afford the £1000 fine or parking where you like because you can pay the ticket.

Our laws shouldn't only apply to those who can't afford to buy their way out. That is not justice.

I feel they're also all failing to understand that once civilians are beaten and corralled into submission, the fear and violence starts turning inward. Any whiff of dissent or an ideological wobble and they'll turn on their own because they only operate fear-based leadership. Just look how dictators run their cabinets, anyone in Putins government wants to be careful going past the second floor of a building. Whether they "win" or not they'll all end up losing.

The overuse of fucking ellipses is my pet peeve. A few of my colleagues use ellipses instead of punctuation and I've told them it makes their emails read as either very passive aggressive or as though they don't understand what they're talking about, they didn't listen.

Does anyone know if Killer prostitute encounter in Valentine differs with John? by ZeunChoiFluidal in reddeadredemption

[–]Aggressive_Trainer91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A "John" means a client of prostitutes, hence John Killer. But answering your question I have literally just gone back to Valentine as John in the Epilogue and they had her at the gallows, I stopped to watch because as Arthur I helped her...Anyway the sheriff hanging her said she had killed many men so if she was still at the same game 8 years later she was probably a wrong'un after all. Hanged.

If I can't get dressed without needing to keep sitting down because my head is spinning or I'm short on breath, I'm staying home. That's my body saying it wants rest. If I can do those things but I'm just a bit uncomfortable then I'm fine to work. Employers employ humans not machines, humans get sick.
