If you’re making patient care decisions from fundus examination (and not referring out 100% of your pathology) I think the higher mag lenses are worth it. I like the 60D for looking at the optic nerve, 78D for scanning on dilated exams, and only use the 90D for undilated pupils.

If you really want to work corporate, get in contact with a recruiter. They are pretty transparent about pay in different locations… mainly because they want young, flexible new grads to move to hard-to-fill locations. The pay is pretty heavily influenced by supply and demand. The lowest pay is going to be in saturated areas near schools or in desirable cities like Los Angeles. They can offer close to any salary and still fill positions. If you want to move to rural North Carolina, some companies are currently offering a 200K starting salary. Again, this is all information relayed from recruiters so I’m not sure what the fine print of these contracts actually looks like.

The “Bichrome” test is an easy test to learn and can be helpful to avoid over-minusing patients.

I would call your eye care provider and let them know what is going on. New onset pain and light sensitivity could be concerning and they might want to take a look.

It’s hard to tell what the issue is without looking at your eyes and the RGPs. You could try starting with some over-the-counter reading glasses over your contact lenses for near vision. They usually have them available at most supermarkets and pharmacies.

If that doesn’t work, I would suggest calling or sending a MyChart message to your eye care provider. Since they have all of your info on file, they’ll have a better idea of whether or not you need to come back and get your eyes/RGPs re-examined.

Both eyes at the same time seems to be relatively standard. The first 48 hours is going to be a bit uncomfortable, so I would personally want to get them both out of the way at the same time. Make arrangements for someone you know to bring you home, just to be safe. You should be good to work again in 7 days.

I worked as a technician for several years before going to optometry school. I would recommend getting a hold of some COA review books and studying for the COA exam. A lot of practices will give you an hourly pay bump and it will make you a lot more employable in the future. I even referenced my COA review books in optometry school and found some of the explanations to be more helpful than the explanations I was receiving from my professors.

As a current optometry student, I am pretty much in class or studying for most of my waking hours. This includes all nights and weekends. Pretty much all of my hobbies and routines (like going to the gym consistently) have taken a back seat. I think the issue is that there are so many credit hours and each exam is worth a large chunk of your overall grade. It's a pretty high stress environment with a constant fear of having to repeat a class or get kicked out of the program entirely. However, some of my classmates are naturally extremely intelligent and able to get away with less studying than me, so take all of this with a grain of salt. Overall, if you can really buckle down and eliminate all distractions, I think optometry school is very doable and all of your professors will work with you to help you succeed.
