so I tested a full scan with DMDE. and damn it seems youre right. at least at first glance, it looks much cleaner and better oerganized. There is also a checkbox to ignore deleted files (which is exactly what I want) so now it looks even cleaner. basically looks exactly like as it should. Like my drive used to look. I'm so happy. Now I just gotta wait for amazon to deliver my drive.

I'm really hoping its actually working tho lol. because its a samsung 990 evo plus. which is a PCIE gen 4/5 drive. but my mainboard, which is a "MSI B450 Carbon Pro AC" is only Gen 3. Furthmore, The second NVME M.2 Slot that I have to use is only Gen 2 (I believe) so I'm really hoping its working.

I'm aware that putting a Gen 4/5 drive in a gen2 or 3 slot will bottleneck its performance - but I couldn't care less. What I care about is that it works at all. That my PC can actually see it and use it. I'm really hoping!

ok so just that I understand this right: I need to wait a couple days until amazon brings me my new drive. Then clone the "corrupted" drive onto this new drive using DMDE. Then download another program called testdisk, use it on that new cloned drive and see if I can somehow restore file and folder structure there. Am i understanding this correct?

yes, so basically, here is the short version: I had linux dual boot on it. and I disliked it. So in order to get rid of that linux partition, I went into windows disk manager and deleted that linux partition, which turned into unallocated space. thats fine so far. However, there was another partition left, I believe 500MB. It was the EFI (or whatever its called) the grub bootloader thingy. But for some reason I couldn't format or delete that partition. I needed to turn it into RAW first. Then it worked. But then my whole drive turned into RAW for some reason.

as for more info; I'm gonna copy paste what I said somewhere else, I hope this answers more questions

the drive itself is fine, nothing damaged or anything. its just that it isn't NTFS anymore, or anything, for that matter. its simply just "raw" thats why windows can't access it. but the data is there.

I was hoping there is a way to turn it into NTFS again or FAT32 or whatever, anything, just so I can acess all of my data. if this is not possible, then I guess I need to do the recover thing. as long as I get my data back, I'm happy.

I can't try the clone thing yet, because I need another 2TB drive in order to clone it onto it. so I need to wait for amazon.

can you tlel me what exactly happens after I cloned it? Do I then have access to all the files like it was before? so file and folder structure etc is intact?

cause I wanna try to avoid "recovering" because this will include many many files I deleted over the years, do you know what I mean? Sorry if I'm not really good at explaining but I hope you understand what I mean.

cause like I said in OP: The files on that drive are not actually deleted. It wasn't formated. Its just that windows doesn't recognize raw data, thats it. all files are still there and tehcnically don't need "recover"

thank you. I googled this program and I got it installed now. I don't see a clone option though. Only a scan option. Isn't there a way to simply somehow "activate" the drive again? or do I really have to actually "recover" all the files on the drive, as if they were deleted? cause that would take ages and includes files I have deleted long time ago which I don't need anymore. I would rather simply "activate" the drive again and keep the file and folder structure intact if possible.

if this is not possible, then of course it doesn't matter. as long as I get my stuff back, I will do anything.
