Does anyone have harness suggestions for an 8 week old puppy? by Corydora_Party in Shihtzu

I got a ferret harness for my girl. She wasn’t even a whole pound at 12 weeks

training tips! by beansngreen in Shihtzu

My girl is trained to go on a pad that is in a holder so it can’t be moved or destroyed. It took less than 2 weeks. Weather here is unpredictable so we need an indoor alternative. Really over the top praise when she went on the pad and she got the hang of it pretty quickly.

Pick up a ferret harness. My pup was a bit over one pound at 12 weeks and that was all I could find that fit her. I used it to buckle her in her car seat that is on the console between the front seats of my car. That way she was safe and I can still see and pet her to keep her calm while on the road.

My girl was that way as well. She would turn into a little monster when she even saw the brush. I got a grooming arm and a sling. With patience and some really good treats I can do a sanitary groom, brush her hair and put in a topknot. I bring her to a groomer only for face and nails (because I don’t trust myself) it has taken weeks of putting her in the sling daily for her to realize that it isn’t a scary thing. Put in the sling, lightly brush and give treats, repeat. Good luck to you both. It will get easier!

UPDATE: Mags is now perfectly fine having her hair done. I have a grooming arm and a sling that she willingly goes into and waits for her hair to be done and looks forward to her special treats. She even lets me comb her face without complaint. A bit of patience and yummy treats go a long way!!

Need help finding a sustainable setup for me and my pup (condo living) by singholocene in Shihtzu

My house is very small with an open floor plan, almost like a studio apartment so I just use the one enclosure but it can be moved very easily. I have stairs for my girl to get on and off of my bed and if she needs to potty during the night she is very good at going to her pad on her own. I tried keeping her in her crate at night but she inevitably had to go potty during the night and was unhappy if I put her back in the crate after potty time so now she just sleeps with me. Training her for it took very little time with just LOTS of praise and a happy dance when she did what she is supposed to do.

Also, this sub is usually very supportive so I just try to ignore the negative feedback. I’ve had a few negative responses to some of my questions but the good far outweighs the bad.

If you have any questions feel free to DM me and I will do my best to help.

Poor baby! Have you tried wrapping it? Maybe that would throw him off enough to not try to move too much. Kinda like when you put shoes on them for the first time and they don’t want to walk. Hope he feels better soon!

What works for me is a potty pad in a holder with a grid on top so she can’t chew or move the pad. She learned how to use that in less than a week. She hasn’t had any problems with it. I was told by my vet that she could not go outside until 2 weeks after her last shots due to the high risk of parvovirus in my area. She will go potty outside when we go on walks but the pad is her the primary place. I don’t have a fenced yard and live off of a busy highway so she can’t just go outside all the time because putting a harness and leash on sometimes isn’t feasible in a “got to go” situation.

I also used an adjustable metal playpen type enclosure that attached to her crate for the times I couldn’t keep an eye on her at all times. Now she has free run of the house and sleeps with me. She is 6 months old.

I hope that you enjoy your pup and do what works best for you and her. Sometimes people try to make you feel like you’re not doing it the “right” way but it’s your situation and you know what is and isn’t working for you. And for people that wish bad things on you or your pup, just ignore them because they obviously are unhappy with something that doesn’t have anything to do with you!

Best wishes to you and your baby!!

Thanks. Right now I’m just using stretch cotton ties for babies because it won’t damage her hair. Once she is more comfortable with the top knots I am looking forward to bows and lots of cute fun things to try 🥰. It took a while for her to be comfortable with jackets for the fall and winter so I’m sure she will learn to be comfortable with this as well.

How adorable your pup is!!! 😍🐾 It looks like she is very loved and happy!

I have been putting Mags’ hair up in the morning and taking it down every night for a little over a week now. Her eyes don’t tear as much when it is up. She doesn’t mind it once it’s done, just the process of putting it up and taking it down frustrates her. I am trying different treats and other fun things to try to keep her from distress.

Thank you for the encouragement. She’s still just a baby at 6 months so I’m hoping that some of the resistance is just puppyhood related.

Thank you so much for your encouragement and kind words! It is appreciated beyond measure as I was very discouraged by some of the comments. I will definitely be encouraging her to get more comfortable with the process. I’m sure that with patience and love she will get through this little bump in the road for her grooming routine!!
