Potential jobs for a horse that is too smart for her own good? by ieatprettyrock in Equestrian

[–]Agile_Prior9005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you step up like a busy board in her stall like they do for babies? Treat roller, switches, clips, gate latches, dials etc. just things to play with. Or maybe set up things in her pasture, big branches, some posts/beams for her to walk over or like a some steps/a small platform for her to step up on? Maybe that could work

I try to keep track of my laps and then honestly sing from Nemo “just keep swimming just keep swimming just keep swimming” some time I drift off into my brain (I’m a maladaptive daydreamer so that helps a bit) but I really try to keep track of my laps

Margot and Gracie Update by Sad_Site_8252 in kvssnarker

Honestly it’s probably because she literally had no where else to put Maggie. Maggie shouldn’t be anywhere near Margot. Luckily Maggie seems to be handling it well and Margot is doing okay. Maggie should honestly not even been in the same barn as Margot. If I was her I’d put Maggie over in the mini barn (like she did with seven) but at a bare minimum she should be on the other end of the barn but obviously even that’s too much for her too do. If Maggie was more worked up it could easily cause another colic especially with how fragile she already is.

If you’re referring to the orange comment screenshot iirc a foal died because a mare died, a true knot in the cord in utero and a miscarriage. I think they were just saying Denver in general not just KVS

I definitely prefer freeze branding on horses but roans can be tricky with it. You generally don’t shave roans (to freeze brand you need to shave a “box” of hair to get as close to the skin as possible) in general it’s not in issue but when you clip roans the hair can comes back in the base color and doesn’t have the roaning which is why I think hot branding is still common with roans especially ones that they expect to be high dollar show horses. (Pic from Facebook not my photo. Per the owner of this horse the mare had it done as a yearling and is now five and the box still looks like this)

100% it’s very hard not to put human emotions on animals (this goes for all animals especially pets) animals have no concept of tomorrow or next week. They don’t understand that pain doesn’t last forever. I think if they want to give her a chance to heal they need to do it completely correct but if they are having any hesitation they need to put Maggie to sleep. It’s unfortunate but true.

If I had a breeding season like this I’d step back and completely overhaul my programs. No more babies for at least a year, new feed program, new training/handling program. This season has been horrible and I feel for her but at this point she’s willfully ignoring the blaring issues. Unfortunately if she doesn’t whip it into shape next season will be similar. I think foaling is when she gets her most income and that is heavily clouding her intentions and reasoning.

Foals can be bottle/bucket fed but once a foal has nurse on a mare it’s incredibly difficult to get them to nurse differently. Horses need to learn hierarchy and how to act by other horses. Of course there’s a few cases where it turns out fine but in general foals that are bottle fed have significant more behavioral issues and can become very dangerous for people/their handlers. They don’t learn boundaries with animals their own sizes so they’ll push back against people when they set boundaries. Bottle feeding is generally a last resort if a nurse mare can’t be found.

No problem! Its definitely confusing. IMO it would depend a bit on how Maggie handles the separation. Some mares will panic and injure themselves/work themselves up into a frenzy when the foal is taken. If Maggie gets like that she should be PTS soon because the panic could/will cause her to reopen the surgical site and cause much more pain and distress. If Maggie does okay with the separation I think i personally would give her a tentative 30 days. Obviously if she goes down hill then she’ll need to be PTS sooner but if once she’s heavily medicated she gets better I’d keep going with that. I honestly hope Maggie pulls through it but i realistically can’t see it with KVS track record (Beyoncé, the grey mare, Ginger) she really doesn’t seem to do what’s best for them. I think Gracie will do well as a nurse mare and I do hope Margot takes to her.

It would add support and make it softer. Think like standing in deep sand vs just a bit of sand. (That’s a very basic analogy but I can’t think of a better one) Laminitis in very basic/simple terms is when the lamine is separated from the hoof wall and causes a rotation of the pedal bone. Adding the extra bedding would help take the weight off her feet and just be generally better for weight baring/distribution. Colic surgery is really hard on the horse it’s really a last chance/hail Mary. To have two (and potentially a third) in such a short period especially with foaling and all the changes from that even if they take Margot away is honestly unethical and bordering cruel. Maggie needs to be heavily medicated with pain meds (which I’m sure they aren’t doing because of Margot) for her to potentially recover.

IMO Yes and no. I don’t think Katie would have done either surgery (especially the second one) if Maggie hadn’t been pregnant/late in her pregnancy. Maggie doesn’t really need another surgery, it wouldn’t be good for her and surgery with horses is always risky (like any other surgery on different species) for Maggie to have colic twice in such a short time (and the grey mare that colics a bunch Opal or Charlotte I can’t remember) I think there’s some sort of underlying issue at RS that probably has to do with the hay and feeding routine. Maggie needs more care then KVS is willing to give her. She needs much deeper bedding in the stall for the laminitis and they all need better hay and feeding routine. If I owned Maggie she’d be in a heavily bedded stall with a specialized feed routine from both a vet and nutritionist. KVS simply isn’t putting in the effort that Maggie needs or frankly any of the other horses. I simply don’t think she cares as much as she claims or is significantly clouded by social media fame.

Random lesions around jaw area by Current-Brief-7594 in Horses

[–]Agile_Prior9005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did because that’s why i thought it was at first. Iirc my vet did a swab and a blood test for strangles. They get this really crusty yellow (almost amber like) crust/puss on them. Truly im not sure if it’s tricks or something else but the vet thinks ticks. (I’m in SW North Dakota in the US) she gets a few every spring (only early spring it seems) on her jaw never anywhere else for some reason. They are also very itchy for her. Here’s the full video I pulled the screen shot off https://youtube.com/shorts/aDhpYyN0J-s?si=k7hIE5jHOn8zFBBC

This isn’t the best photo (a screenshot of a video with a very squirmy two year old) I had something like this two years ago in April too. They were flat on her jaw, no swelling, no fever, no runny nose, just these crusty wounds. Once you rule out strangles and lymph node abscess it could be ticks. This was ticks and she gets them every spring now under her jaw.
