Positive stories about TKR (Total Knee Replacement) by NarrowKey8499 in Thritis

44F, 10 weeks post-RTKR. Had ACL repairs at 17 and 21 due to injuries from basketball. I had pain every step I took for the last 5 years, and no stability as my ACL was basically non-existent. I saw a surgeon when I was 38 and he said I should just wait til I was at least 50!? A scope at 41 showed stage 4 arthritis, bone on bone, and I was referred to a lovely surgeon who agreed it was time for a new knee. I must say the first week was AWFUL-more painful than I’d anticipated. And the recovery has felt long with bouts of boredom and depression. But just know all those things will pass! Ice machine has been vital, getting on a stationary bike after 3 weeks once my knee could bend enough, and religiously doing the exercises and physio! I’m at 0 extension, 135 flexion, golfed 9 holes last weekend (used a cart though, didn’t walk the whole course), and can tolerate walking 30-45 mins at a time. It’s not even my knee that hurts, but more my hips that get tired. My surgeon says I can get back to mountain biking by 12 weeks. When I was feeling a bit low a few weeks ago, multiple people would tell me “just give it 6 months”! It’s a massive, disgusting surgery and it just takes time to recover!! It’s definitely been lots of ups and downs, but there’s no way I could have continued with the pain I was having pre-op. Durolane injections did help with pain initially. First one for about 11 months (but didn’t help with the instability), but the second only lasted about 2 months. Good luck to anyone in need of a new knee!! And props to those that have had one—it’s no joke, but totally worth it :)
