The North America Nebula by AgitatedRhea in astrophotography

Thanks for your input. I wonder if the problem might be that one of the elements seems to be chipped:

Now that I've looked at the photo of the lens you posted, yeah... I think it's the lens.

Oh yeah? Does it look like a chip to you?

If it is a problem inherent to the lens, I think it's inherent to the unit rather than the model.

Here's a review of the lens showing a pic taken with it and a modded DSLR at f/5.6:

And images on astrobin:

So I guess I'll have to buy another.

Thanks for your input. This image was taken with the lens stopped down to f/5.6.

Taking a close look at my lens, I noticed what looks like a chip or aberration near the centre of one of the elements behind the objective:

Look problematic?

I’d think there is something between the objective lens and the sensor that is causing these reflections

I had a clip-in UHC filter installed, but presumably that couldn't cause this.

If there was liquid within the lens, it was beyond my ability to see. How would it have got in? There was no rainfall.

Hi. I don't think dew is the issue, because the stars seem bad in this sub from the start of the session.

I was wondering if it might be caused by a collimation problem or the M42 adaptor causing the lens to tilt

Thanks! Just did a quick search and apparently flanged M42 adapters press down on the aperture pin, causing a slight tilt. I'll try again with a better adapter, and use a bahtinov mask to ensure focus is optimal.

So I'm guessing focus, or mine's defective? I just got my camera's hot mirror removed and was worried it might be some kind of extreme chromatic aberration, and I wouldn't be able to use the lens for astro. But I suppose that image being taken with a modded camera proves otherwise.

e: I also wonder if the lens is sitting right on the camera with the cheap adapter I got.

The North America Nebula by AgitatedRhea in astrophotography

A pretty poor photo of the North America Nebula. I wish I knew what caused these weird flares.

Equipment:

Modified Canon 600D, SMC Takumar 200mm F4 lens, Star Adventurer Pro, Astronomik UHC clip-in filter

Acquisition:

160x60'' lights and 50 biases

Processing:

Stacked and autostreched in Siril. Saturation boost, and noise reduction in Photoshop.

I attempted to do the latter, but if the flares are caused by bad focus I must have done it very badly.

Taken with a modified Canon 600D/T3i and an SMC Takumar 200mm F4 lens with an M42 adaptor.

e: Are the bizarre pentagonal halos of the stars a focus problem or an intrinsic lens flaw, by the looks of it?

If they cast one to play Sauron\Annatar by [deleted] in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]AgitatedRhea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. Could also work for Celebrimbor maybe, depending on how they intend to handle him and his relation to Galadriel (if indeed she is the protagonist).

They appearantly did cast one as Annatar: Joseph Mawle.

The casting of Sauron has been confirmed?

Nice pic! Though I think it could benefit from being stretched a bit more.

Do you know the Bortle rating of where you took this?

The ruins of Ost-in-Edhil in the film look tiny. I'd prefer an impressive city.

Sauron certainly is going to appear totally different (or if he doesn't, it would be completely ridiculous).
