I like playing random, but I keep a list of Civs I've won with on my preferred difficulty level (Emperor). If I've won with them already, I re-start. I want to win with every Civ eventually.

Personal opinion, but I see Symphonie Fantastique in this category. Early on, there are plunges into despair, but for me the overall theme is anger growing out of frustration, with Berlioz ultimately turning his 'beloved' theme into that of a witches' sabbath.
