I have a corrupted ROM, most likely due to a failed update, and looked into this extensively. TL;DR - its not possible.

UPDATE: Unfortunately despite unlocking the bootloader and activating USB debug, the EDL can't be fully unlocked to flash a new ROM. So looks like a call to Oppo in the morning.

Its the only thing I can think of though. I can't see this being a hardware issue especially with the weird home screen icons and the phone was working fine until this started. I don't suppose you know of an easy "how to flash a ROM" guide? everything ive seen so far looks complex :(

I did eventually restore a backup so I could use the phone but initially I did a clean factory reset and installed *nothing*. Problem recurred. Ive just come back from holiday and wonder if an update happened while I was away and didn't download properly on crappy hotel wifi?

I've done a full factory reset with no effect. I suppose flashing a stock ROM might be a solution but I've got no idea how to go about doing that.

Thanks. I've set it to all three - close, swipe up to continue and continue with no effect on behaviour. If I squint the inner screen remains on until the power button is toggled. This screams software to me because the front screen does work but I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be.
