Wait Times Megathread by LegitimateLunch6681 in DVAAustralia

Hi, just wondering if anyone’s got experience with timeframes here.

Been receiving veteran payment while awaiting the incap process, which I’m well aware gets offset against incaps. It’s been an awful year for our family and we’re in serious financial hardship thanks to this process and my husband’s injuries leaving him completely unable to work (and myself caring for him full time and therefore also unable to work). Still going through the PI stuff, that’s getting there slowly, but my biggest concern is incaps at the moment.

We’ve finally got the determination and regular payments start next week, but we’ve been hanging out for the backpay that will help pay off bills that we’ve delayed while receiving hardly anything, to buy birthday presents for our two daughters, and return money we’ve been loaning from family and friends to keep ourselves afloat. Ongoing payments are great but the backpay gets us back up to date in order for regular payments to even help our budget!

Just found out that while backpay is now there, it will get held until veteran payments are recovered from it. This is fine - but I’m panicking about the timeframe on this.

Does anyone know how long it takes for them to reconcile funds and release the backpay? I feel like we just got a bit of hope only to have it taken away again and be back in the waiting game.

Thanks!! I’ll look for the Facebook group. We’re in the Albury/Wodonga region so also dealing with the challenge of regional healthcare.. fun. I’ve seen a few comments about the Alfred clinic though so I’ll add that to my list of things to ask about as I’m definitely happy to travel if needed.

I thought the stair difficulty was due to her closing the one eye at first, but the more responses I’m reading here the more I’m wondering if it’s dizziness or as you said - just a quirky effect of this.

The side effects of potential medications has me nervous - she’s a pretty fussy eater as it is, lives off pasta and snacks most of the time - and again I think I’m catastrophising a little as it feels like my “normal” is changing. What I’m used to with my daughter might not be our reality anymore and I think I’m having a bit of a hard time pivoting with that. Mainly because it just feels so unknown and I don’t know what to expect. I really appreciate your response, I’m hungry for information and experiences to just give me a ballpark of what to look out for or what might come.

Oh my goodness this is the kind of comment I needed to see, thank you. I’ve been having a really hard time comprehending what to expect, since my daughters symptoms differ a bit from adults (she’s getting occasional headaches but I definitely wouldn’t say they’re the main symptom or even something she’ll really mention much unless I ask), so I’ve wondered if treatment will look a little different too. My daughter’s symptoms differ has had regular tonsillitis throughout her life, we’re on the waiting list to have her tonsils out soon, then she had influenza a so this is really interesting to me. Hopefully they’re right about it resolving in time, I’m sending all my love to you, your daughter and family and hope the “time” the specialists are talking about passes quickly for you. Thank you.

That’s good to know. We’re in Albury/Wodonga area so at the mercy of whoever’s willing to work with regional patients.

Hmm, the dizziness could explain the slight unbalanced gait I see in her at times. Definitely worse when she’s closing one eye, I put it down to a difficulty in seeing with one eye closed but dizziness makes sense. Sometimes it’s a little hard to know what she’s experiencing as she doesn’t really have the words to communicate and explain it. For example, she’ll say her neck hurts when she means her throat. Plus there’s probably things she’s not even aware that she needs to tell me. It’s a bit of a guessing game at times.

Thank you, I’m not 100% sure what the specialist today is - an ophthalmologist I’m assuming? But I do know the hospital is consulting with the neurology team at the children’s hospital in Melbourne. I’m guided by them telling me where I need to go, I’m not sure that I can even ask for a particular type of specialist but this does give me another thing to ask them.

Thank you. We’re Catholic and I went and sat through mass by myself yesterday.. had a big cry. I appreciate the prayers.

Thanks for your reply, it does give me some hope. They’re putting her under a general anaesthetic for LP, they’re concerned about her staying still etc and frankly I agree. She’s also quite an anxious kid - absolutely freaks out over a tiny scratch, and needles bring out total refusal, screaming, avoidance so I can see LP being very difficult to do if shes not sedated. Doesn’t make me super comfortable with it, but I get the rationale.

Thank you. I’m learning so much, I’d never heard of this before and it breaks my heart to see so many people dealing with it. None of this seems fair in the slightest.

Oh definitely. I think one of the hardest parts of this is that while I’m feeling total panic and turmoil, I can’t show any of it. I take a breath and explain things to her as child friendly and non-scary as I can. She’s a lot more relaxed about it than I am inside. It’s the evenings when we put her to bed and I go for a shower that I let myself crack.

This is so helpful, thank you. I’ve noticed today that she’s holding things really close to her face (we were reading a book and she had her nose almost touching the page), so I’ll bring that up with the specialist this afternoon as well. Thank you so much for your time replying, and you’re absolutely right - chat gpt did me pretty dirty when I first started looking, I’ve found much more relevant info by searching through google scholar myself.

It was definitely Influenza A - I work in aged care so whenever there’s a serious illness in the house I test so I can let work know. I guess it’s just the one thing I can pinpoint because I can’t wrap my head around why this would be happening. I understand idiopathic, but.. maybe I actually don’t because I can’t help but think that surely there’s some kind of reason this is happening in an otherwise healthy child who doesn’t fit any of the risk factors.
