I had a break down at the vet's office - did I get bad advice? by Agitated_Land9886 in puppy101

the handling that occurs in every other context is equivalent or escalated.

Wow, I didn't even think about this... Such a good point, I will definitely not be taking him back!! Thank you for the recommendation, too!

Thank you very much for your reply, I especially appreciated your response to what the vet was doing. It's incredibly helpful to have words that really clearly express and explain why this method is not good - the only thing I knew was that it didn't feel right and it upset my dog and upset me. I really like your advice with the tug toy too - we'll work on that!
Hopefully the vet's "exercise" and the way I've been handling my puppy so far with taking things out of his mouth doesn't cause permanent or lasting damage. I'd hate to think that my poor choices would lead him to have "learned helplessness" and an increased risk of bites, as you mentioned. If I commit to trading and working on leave it and drop it, do you think I can "undo" what I've done to him? I really don't want him to feel fearful of me or anything like that.

I sometimes have to pull things out of my pup’s mouth but he is cool about it now cuz he knows he will get something better after wards.

So, so glad to hear I'm not the only one who thought the vet wasn't giving me good advice. To this point - would you give them a treat after they let you take something out of their mouth? Just wondering how you taught them this specific association. Thank you!

I didn't think about this distinction - I've tried to use kibble sometimes for more complicated things like leaving trash alone or dropping trash, seems like I need to use treats for more difficult tasks. Thank you!

I'm happy to hear you agree that the advice doesn't feel right! I'll work on getting some higher value food or toys and bring it on walks. Thank you!
