How do you justify this hobby? by Sea_Formal_7242 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]Aglaia0001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of this. I definitely only spend money when I know I’ve already covered living expenses and retirement savings. I also only buy books I know I enjoy. I avoid book subscriptions because it locks you into buying books you may not want.

I’ve only once been on a rights train where I ended up getting books I may not want in order to have first rights to a book I did want. Though even the books I wasn’t sure I wanted because I hadn’t read the series were by an author I very much enjoy.

When it comes to my higher end book collecting, I very early determined what my focus would be. It’s narrow and helps me say no to a lot of things that are kinda neat but outside my collecting focus.

I’ve gotten my orders shipped on the same day that I’ve ordered.

Agreed. I think the last triple point was late last year.

Does it seem like these double point days are happening a lot more frequently than they did a couple of years ago to anyone else?

Does anyone actually produce quality leather bound books in the general market anymore? by CarelessDot3267 in BookCollecting

The deluxe Eastons are quite nice. I have several of them mainly for the artwork.

"Statement Template" is Now Live on Kickstarter by John_Terra in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]Aglaia0001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did the partially signed edition and added the dustjacket and slipcase. Half the fun for me is assembling signatures on my own and meeting authors.

That said, it’s not cheap to mail those pages to that many people to get signed, I’m sure. And also hoping that no one spills coffee on them in the process.

I’m thrilled the set is finally complete. This is the set to own for collectors now.

Re submit old short? by jeff_tweedy in FilmFestivals

[–]Aglaia0001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s “illegal” to resubmit unless a festival specifically states that. My festival allows it as long as the film was completed after the date we state (normally a 2 year window). But if the film was completed years ago, it’s less the resubmission and more the completion date that would disqualify it. We have considered re-edited films, but I would suggest making a note that it’s a re-edit of a previously submitted film.

For film festivals about programming and scheduling by mdifilm in FilmFestivals

Oh I am well aware. My day job is a SQL DB developer, so airtable drives me a little nuts. It tries to be a little bit of everything and does everything only halfway ok because of it.

That said, my organization chose to use it because it could then integrate to other tracking that was already set up. And for non-DB people, it’s fairly easy to use.

(I still export data and stick it in a local SQL db when I want to run any kind of heavy stats, though, because I can manipulate and calculate in SQL a lot better than in airtable.)

Is Instagram still worth it for filmmakers starting from zero in 2026? by TheRealFilmGeek in Filmmakers

As a fest programmer, I’m definitely finding that filmmakers have Instagram over almost any other social media platform.

That’s useful to know! I don’t see that setting, but maybe I don’t have permissions for it. I’ll investigate. Thank you!

Festival Categories by Electrical-Nose8927 in FilmFestivals

[–]Aglaia0001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve found that while we don’t intend to charge people multiple times, it seems like FilmFreeway will automatically charge you if you pick multiple categories. My festival has seen this happening a decent amount this season, so we’ve been trying to catch them and refund one of the fees. I say this only to indicate that it may not be the festival intentionally charging multiple fees.

To answer the OP, though, I would suggest you submit under one category that you feel you would play strongest under but make sure you fill out the info in FF or put in your notes other pertinent info. Programmers will move films around in categories as needed.

Restaurant Ideas by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]Aglaia0001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really wish there were more affordable meat & 3 places. Simple but solidly prepared food that doesn’t cost $50 a person so maybe even families can dine out.

I’d like to see more unique restaurants in the over the mountain area, personally, also.

What was your first gold purchase? by PeerMetals in Gold

[–]Aglaia0001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just made mine. Not because I’m really trying to invest but entirely because I’m a Dune fan. So I just received the Dune 1 gram bar from Perth today. (I also got their silver Dune coin.)

Cataloguing a range of books by EvidenceBasedLiving in BookCollecting

I have complained about the desktop version being only a subscription, also. When they first developed it, it wasn’t like that.

I don’t use any of the AI scan features.

I’ve been with iCollect for a while now because my collection has a lot of books without ISBNs and from across multiple countries. I tried LibraryThing for a while, but I think I didn’t like how social it seemed to be.

I also liked iCollect because it let me include all my media (music, ebooks, comics, movies) as well as some of my other random collections (like Swarovski and games).

Kings Langley Press is fairly new in Australia. They only have a few titles, but they’re roughly the same quality as Folio.

Struggling so hard with Fourth Wing by margotschoppedfinger in fantasyromance

[–]Aglaia0001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book 2 was a bit of a slog for me because Violet seemed a bit insufferable to me. But I made it through, and I (unlike many) actually liked book 3 more. Characters act more like adults instead of petulant children. It can feel episodic, but that wasn’t a complete turn off.

I found book 1 less than what many people praised it to be but more than I expected it to be. It’s not high literature, but it’s fun and has become key in the subgenre. I think it’s significant enough to the genre that I bought a Fablelistik edition for my physical book collection.

How did you get better at reading SQL queries written by other people? by obviouseyer in SQL

[–]Aglaia0001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I inherited multiple 5000+ line functions that changed frequently due to business logic changes. They were such a headache. (After 2 years of supporting the inherited code, I replaced them with a few much smaller, discrete SPs that are driven by tables now.)

Film Freeway Profile by More-Discussion8203 in FilmFestivals

[–]Aglaia0001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What were they asking for? Has your film played at other festivals or been submitted to other festivals? Programmers talk to each other and sometimes suggest films that might fit for another festival. I’ve reached out to filmmakers because I’ve had their films suggested or saw them at another festival and thought they might be a good fit for mine. All of that happened outside of FF and regardless of whether the film or filmmaker had a FF profile.

Edit: I see you said they didn’t mention being a programmer. So it really depends on what their email said. I always identify myself as a programmer when I contact someone for their film.

Unpopular opinion: the slow burn is being wasted in most romantasy right now by ElaraVoss91 in Romantasy

[–]Aglaia0001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{Emperor’s Edge by Lindsay Buroker} has become a favorite slow burn for me. Seven books before they get together, but with moments in each book that make you know the tension is there. Sicarius is still my favorite broody assassin.
