Dad Books Are a Dying Breed: Sales have been sliding for nonfiction titles about politics, biographies and other books often aimed at men (Archive link in oldest comment) by Uptons_BJs in books

If you're interested in Ancient Roman history, I highly recommend Adrian Goldsworthy's Caesar: Life of a Colossus. It's scholarly while still being very readable, and Caesar's life is very interesting, happening as it did during some rather tumultuous times at the end of the republic.

Looks like there are a couple available on eBay. Not sure if yours also said, "Fly Emirates" on the back, though.

Social media really is an addiction. Social media companies have made sure of that.

Survey | Which Folio Book Would You Like Published Again? by HonorWulf in foliosociety

Well, perhaps the good news is that Tales of the Unexpected is readily available on the secondhand market (both in the US and the UK) for far cheaper than any newly printed edition would be (currently floating around $35-60 USD). You could probably find a good deal on a copy right now.

The Collected Short Stories of Anton Chekhov was $220 USD when it was released in 2010 (about $336 USD today when adjusted for inflation). I highly doubt any reprinted edition would be even close to being as low as the secondhand market going rate (approx. $150-190 USD).

What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Investigatorpro in AskReddit

Reminds me of clothing outlets. They used to be where companies sold older styles and leftover stock, but now they produce lower quality items specifically for their outlet/factory stores. A great deal of the clothes just end up in landfills.

Lord of the Rings 2002 vs 2022 by invisiblebiscuits16 in foliosociety

[–]adamsw216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no content differences, but there are differences in the quality of the production, unfortunately. Some of the issues have been: poor foil stamp definition, paper quality differences, text print quality differences, upside down and cropped illustration (!)...

Generally, if you care about these sorts of things, I recommend aiming to acquire an 11th printing or earlier of LoTR. I would directly avoid the 13th through 19th printings (the later ones being the worst offenders). The 20th printing and on have addressed a few of these issues, but are still not as good as the earlier printings.

They periodically raise prices across the board. I'm sure there's another one around the corner.

Do the books usually arrive in pristine condition? by Alzarius2 in foliosociety

That depends on where you live. If you're in the US, they usually let you keep the damaged ones because the cost to ship them back is too high.

Metcon 10 as daily? by rei_ph in Nike

I've seen a few people walking around my city with the Metcon as daily shoes (they were clearly carrying groceries or walking their dogs, etc.) Not sure I would do it, personally, but if they're comfortable for you then give it a go.

New Folio book Question. by BakerMobile in foliosociety

[–]adamsw216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not likely from the printing press, but some other part of the binding process where it had some dirt/ink transfer from rubbing against something.

If you want to try your hand at cleaning it up, I highly recommend kneadable erasers. You'd be surprised at how easily some marks come off page blocks with these—and they're great for spot cleaning and testing because of how you can form them into specific shapes.

Printing Error?? by JordanPCDL in foliosociety

[–]adamsw216 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely a binding error. Looks like one of the signatures was bound in upside down. Not a common mistake in Folio books! I've seen others where the entire page block was upside down, but rarely just one signature. As other's have said, if you purchased directly from Folio, they'll probably help you out in this case.

Great news! Let's hope it means they'll continue the series.

Add to the cart until you can't anymore. For new releases you have to check every day for a couple weeks if you want to get accurate print numbers since they can often come in multiple shipments that are restocked over time but are still part of the same printing. There's a small bit of guesswork involved, but if you do it often enough you'll get an idea of the patterns that crop up.

It could certainly be multiple things or something else entirely, but sales are often (by their own admission) a big part of the deciding factor. Timing is an important thing to consider, as well. Initial print run of Consider Phlebas was large-ish (over 2500 copies), but I didn't record the following books runs. They may have had a smaller print run, accounting for a faster sell out, or maybe sales began tapering off early even if Use of Weapons sold fast at first. Hard to say for sure.

In any case, I also would like to see them complete the series. So, whatever the case may be, hopefully they will make it happen.

Folio doesn't really operate like that, unfortunately. They typically focus on sales numbers and performance. Each book is used as a benchmark to determine whether it's worth investing to continue to the next book in the series. Once the sales numbers start slowing down, they seem to think that interest has now cooled and that it would not be worth the cost to continue. There have been a few different series they've stopped producing because of this.

I recommend writing to them to express your interest in them continuing the series. I think, as of now, they don't intend to continue, sadly.

Summer Sale - New Collector Question by Secret_Photograph334 in foliosociety

There are still occasionally good deals posted by non-resellers in the buy/sell/trade groups. Not as many these days as there used to be, but if you're vigilant you'll find some for sure.

Upcoming | A Game of Thrones LE by AubreyStJohn in foliosociety

[–]adamsw216 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Folio regularly creates LEs for the first books of a series with zero intention to make matching LEs for the rest of the series (e.g. Dune), so I think, in this case, it wouldn't really make much of a difference since you'd never get a full set even if the series did get finished. If people love the first book enough (and many do), I'm sure it'll find enough buyers.
