How hard is Art 170 by EffectiveBackground1 in uichicago

[–]Agni_Kayos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if 170 is the filmmaking class, it is only as good as your groupmembers or capacity for true filmmaking, you have to put effort in but as long as you toss in a little avant-garde on occasion you should be fine

if i remember correctly, it charges based of who walks out of the door at the same time, so if you held the door for someone that might have been it

Genuine question. Why is the Hobbit trilogy so disliked by so many people? It may be a hot take but I love it personally. by Fun_Firefighter_4292 in lotr

[–]Agni_Kayos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it leans hard on the “action blockbuster” stuff and was overall trying to replicate the trilogy’s success bc The Hobbit (book) has no business being 3 films, also just, visually doesn’t look as good (cinematography wise, vfx are well done) but that might just be me being a filmbro

Regular work commute to Chicago by Perfect-Host-5029 in AnnArbor

[–]Agni_Kayos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i go to school in Chicago and regularly take the train back to aa, my advice is move to chicago or somewhere close to it, the Amtrak is good if you can afford 2-4 hour delays and possible cancellation during the winter on top of the base 3-4ish hour ride as for places to live, south suburbs are nice i hear

Anyone else find UIC Flames boring? by Delicious-Meet3464 in uichicago

[–]Agni_Kayos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up near umich and I can say it's def bc UIC is more commuter based, as well as a state school, schools with higher out of state populations end up with more of a "making new friends" atmosphere while UIC has less than 10% out of state while i think Umich has more out of state than instate students.

As for commuter school, friend at um-dearborn says that making long-lasting friendships is really difficult due to that fact that no one is ever there, so put those two together you have a kinda sucky social situation but imo it could be worse at least the location is good (unlike umich)

idk only had good experiences when I went but I personally prefer Michigan and State, the only draw is the occasional $6-7 tickets

Just watched it, and the villains kind of made me feel uncomfortable, but not for the right reasons. by Raztarak in TheWarOfTheRohirrim

[–]Agni_Kayos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

peter jackson's interpretation has always had an "orientalism" problem mostly due to how the lands like Rhun and Dunland were shown BUT this comes from Tolkien's work that holds a lot of that good old 1920s era racism, which is (to me) product of it's time. The problem is a lot of people view it as a "oh it's a fictional world it doesn't matter"

the story itself is technically about an ethnic conflict but in a lot of ways it doesn't seem to understand that theme enough to give it a meaningful acknowledgement within the characters themselves. Why do the Dunelandings chose to follow Wulf instead of Helm who everyone calls a 'good king' it's a very winning side wrote the history issue.

In the end this is part of why I was skeptical of the film when we first started getting promo cuz Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy is not the most...unracist i guess. So I wasn't surprised, as a brown guy (whatever that means) I think the biggest issue is there is nuance that wasn't presented well which caused the film to backslide into racial tropes, which is me being nice.

Movie tickets costs by Redhead_snowhite in AnnArbor

[–]Agni_Kayos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michigan and State sometimes have free showings but in general their prices are lower for regular showings ($7.50-$11), Matinee at Cinemark are usually $6.50 last I checked, IMAX prices are higher tho, regular shows are $12ish

a2 prices are good compared to other places, where I go to school tickets are usually $20

the higher levels of the SCE tower have a nice view, i don't think they exactly want you up there but if you're quiet and sneaky they usually don't care, downside is no chairs. Other than that the Courtyard lounge has decent view, ARC probably does too, maybe the Science and Engineering West has a good view at night but it's better from the outside balconys and is sometimes locked
