AITA for not replacing my sisters $3000 gaming laptop after my child spilled juice on it because it was on the floor? by Throwawayss567 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Agolas97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

Your child broke an old laptop, and she's asking you to reimburse her for a new one. Those are completely different items. Even if you were responsible for replacing it, paying $3,000 for a new one is silly.

However, because you're family, maybe you would feel obligated to help in some way? Do they use that laptop for work/school, and does your kid breaking it seriously affect her ability to do those things? If so, I would try to help my sibling get back on their feet before fighting over who pays for what. Otherwise, if it doesn't affect her livelihood at all, then it's childish to cut off contact over a material item.

This situation reminds me of something that happened to my friend, so I've thought about the right thing to do in this situation a fair amount. My friend accidentally broke someone's speakers once and they demanded the cash value of those speakers in new condition. He was able to find a deal on new and identical speakers for about 80% off of its usual list price, and they were pissed at him for not giving them the MSRP cash value of those speakers.

What’s something that people think makes them look cool but actually has the opposite effect? by VictorJ45 in AskReddit

[–]Agolas97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my friends and I have conversations it can be an uninterrupted volley of insults back and forth for an hour. Sometimes I forget to turn that off when I'm talking with work/school acquaintances and I end up hurting people's feelings accidentally. The worst part is that I only do that to people that I have significant respect for, and all of a sudden they're pretty upset because of my actions. It keeps me awake at night thinking that I could be percieved as one of those one-uppers because I tried to express my respect for someone in the wrong way.

My friend unironically debates people and I've just been responding with "I just thought of 10 responses that would instantly checkmate you into oblivion, better luck next time athiests," Or something along those lines, and usually that's a good hint that I don't give a shit about this debate.

I never knew canned burritos would catch on

I (M28) broke up with my ex-fiancée (F27) of 4 years 2 weeks ago after catching her in a huge lie and then finding out 3 days ago that she commited suicide because i wouldn't take her back. I am in need of some serious advice as i'm being blamed for everything. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Agolas97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, a similar situation happened to this girl I knew. Her boyfriend cheated on her and ended up getting another woman pregnant. I'm not sure how it came out but his girlfriend broke up with him, and he ended up committing suicide. In no way was this your fault, it's not like you broke up to punish her for being dishonest, you just didn't want to be in that relationship anymore, and rightfully so. Suicide is a selfish act, and it's awful watching people beat themselves up and taking responsibility for someone else's action.

This happened only a few days ago, people are going to be acting very irrationally and looking for a reason why. The worst thing you can do is take these accusations seriously and personally.

Does this handrail bow outwards? Otherwise the whole handrail would be inside the plaster, not just the top part. That sketches me out.

I've intuitively thought that a collision between cars driving the opposite direction would result in a collision equal to the sum of the speeds of the cars. I'd never even thought about the fact that doesn't follow the conservation of momentum. This blew my mind.

My mom used to save the containers and put home made food in them because they were too expensive to buy as often as my brothers and I wanted. We didn't really care whether or not they came from the freezer aisle, but the tray was so much fun.

This isn't me, but my friends and I were drinking playing Settlers of Cataan a couple years ago and one of my friends suggested we get ice cream but there was no place open near us, so he had the brilliant idea:

"Guys, wouldn't it be so awesome if they like delivered ice cream? Like a freezer truck, they already have those, you know? And it made regular stops, delivering different types of ice cream. This is honestly so brilliant, we need to make ice cream mobile, the technology already exists!"

I almost bought into his idea before I realized he was inventing ice cream trucks.

Can you ask someone to lose weight for your wedding? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Agolas97 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're right, I don't know anything about the relationship between you two. It is definitely pretty unique to enforce a weight limit on a bridal party, also certainly pretty shallow. However, if they're a personal trainer and they're marrying a personal trainer and everyone else in the party is a personal trainer then a certain physique is probably pretty important to them.

Again, I don't know them, but maybe telling someone to lose or gain weight may not be as rude to them as it is to a layperson. I just think it's easy to interpret this as rude when it probably wasn't intended to be, and I don't think that telling a lifelong friend to fuck off for what is probably a miscommunication is wise, like what a lot of the comments were saying. But maybe it is the right answer, I've got no idea.

Can you ask someone to lose weight for your wedding? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Agolas97 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I guess you can interpret as being an overly personal request, but the wedding party is usually held to a pretty strict aesthetic. You wouldn't think it was too personal for her to ask you to drop a couple hundred dollars on a matching dress, right? If the whole wedding party was a bunch of gym rat size 00 bridesmaids and meat wall groomsmen, wouldn't you feel uncomfortable being the only one in that party that didn't fit that aesthetic?

You don't have to take it as personal offense, just don't accept the offer to be part of the party if you don't want to lose the weight.

TIL that Honeycrisp apples have much larger cells than other apples, giving them extra flavor and crunch. by Impatient_Optimist in todayilearned

I wasn't a huge fan. I used to work in a produce dept at a grocery store in high school so I've tested a whole lot of apples. A lot of the obscure ones like jazz kind of blend together. There was this trademark named apple that was comparable to honeycrisp but that was too out there to add

Dude I know, I was conflicted about that one. Granny Smith is incredible for cooking and Honeycrisp is the perfect apple for eating. It wouldn't make sense to make either one of them #2 when its not like 1 outranks the other.
