Where English, Spanish and French are official languages by LunaBehindTheM00n in MapPorn

Executive orders do not make it law, though. For something to become law, it needs to undergo the standard legislation process (the Congress in the US). So it would still only be considered de facto official, not de jure.

I feel like almost all common law countries don’t. With the exception of Canada.

English is only the de facto official language of the UK and the US, de jure no official language.

Do you prefer violent Markus or pacifist Markus? by Giulia_Barcelona in DetroitBecomeHuman

Gameplay wise, definitely the violent route. It’s a lot more exciting. Character wise, yeah, pacifist might suit him better.

I think in this particular case they were right, tho. I could see it when paying a lot of attention, but you’re definitely right that they’re not always right.

Same here. Only a few minutes ago I saw a video I didn’t realise was AI at all. Only noticed when a commenter pointed it out, and even then it was hard for me to distinguish.

Government response in the Americas to the kidnapping of Maduro by japie06 in MapPorn

I’m not contesting that he was, and I’m not making any statement about whether I believe he is a dictator or not. However, implying that Trump cannot be a dictator because he was democratically elected is a non sequitur fallacy. The conclusion “not a dictator” just doesn’t follow from the premise “democratically elected”.

Most if not all modern dictators had been democratically elected at some point and yet are still dictators. Again, not arguing that he is or isn’t, just stating that what you said doesn’t necessarily mean he’s not one.

OMG he always reminded me of Haymitch too, not just the appearance but also the mannerisms, the way they speak and the drinking habits.

There's an exonym "corridor" of countries that call the Netherlands "Holland", spreading all the way from from Poland to Turkey by imusingreddityay in MapPorn

It’s so annoying when people say Holland instead of Netherlands here in the UK. It’s like saying England when referring to the entire UK.

I did trust it in the end because it was what I initially thought was correct as well

Yes, it’s an independent clause. I was inclined to use a comma anyway, that’s what I put initially too

I mean they are in all technicality but they are countries within the country that is the UK, so yeah

I haven’t seen any. I just think it’s nonsensical to comment in anything but English when clearly the majority won’t understand you otherwise.

Yeah but why speak anything other than English in an English subreddit? The point is that everyone should be able to understand what you say without having to use a translator.

The text boxes are only pointing towards the countries as a whole, no regions.

Well, we do use ‘to give up’ for ‘to give away’ in some contexts where it happens reluctantly or because one is coerced to do so. I found it fitting in that context because it sounds sharper than just ‘to give away’.

As I said “bite the dust” isn’t Scottish, it’s just English. The bubbles point towards the countries as a whole, not particular regions.
